Erdinger Weissbraeu was founded in 1886 in Erding, Bavaria, as the 'Weisse Braeuhaus'. Franz Brombach bought the brewery in 1935 and renamed it ERDINGER Weissbraeu in 1949; it remains in Brombach family ownership and describes itself as the largest family-owned German wheat beer brewery, exporting to 106 countries across five continents.

Erdinger repositioned its non-alcoholic wheat beer in 2001 as an isotonic thirst quencher for athletes, and that sports positioning still anchors the brand: it sponsors the ERDINGER Active TEAM of professional triathletes, including two-time Ironman World Champion Patrick Lange (in the team since 2017), and partners with the HYROX fitness race series. Erdinger's head of sales and marketing, Felix Durchdewald, has credited that health-and-sport framing, rather than the liquid itself, as the key to the product's success.

It is brewed in accordance with the Bavarian Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot) using water drawn from the brewery's own two wells, 160 metres below ground. The finished beer is isotonic and contains vitamin B9 (folic acid) and vitamin B12 plus polyphenols (30mg per 100ml), at under 0.5% ABV and 25 kcal per 100ml - around 40% fewer calories than Erdinger's standard wheat beer.

In German trade voting it was named 'Getraenk des Jahres' in the alcohol-free beer segment by Getraenke Zeitung in both 2021 and 2022. In the UK it is sold in 500ml bottles and cans through Tesco, Waitrose, Asda and Morrisons, and the range has grown to include fruit variants - Alkoholfrei Grapefruit rolled into UK stores from September 2021, alongside Alkoholfrei Zitrone - plus a Brauhaus Helles Alkoholfrei lager.

Recognition: Named 'Getraenk des Jahres' (Beverage of the Year) in the alcohol-free beer segment by the German drinks trade paper Getraenke Zeitung in both 2021 and 2022, based on its survey of 4,500 German beverage markets asking which product sold best in each segment. Also won silver in the alcohol-free beer category at the about-drinks.de Beverage Award 2022.

That has been the key for the success of the product. Nobody had done that before.
