9000 Joseph Campau Ave, Hamtramck, MI 48212
Awafi Cafe sits on the south side of Hamtramck, the small Muslim-majority city ringed by Detroit that's home to one of the largest Yemeni-American communities in the country. It's a halal coffeehouse from the ground up: no alcohol has ever been on the premises, so the "non-alcoholic program" here is simply the full drink menu, not a side list added to placate anyone.
That menu splits into traditional and modern. On the traditional side, Awafi pours Yemeni coffees by name — Sana'ani, Mufawar, Qishr, Rad'ai, and Jubani among them — brewed from organic imported beans, with the cardamom-forward Mufawar drawing particular praise from regulars. On the modern side is a printed "Refreshers" section built entirely around virgin mojitos in four flavors (Blueberry, Mango, Raspberry, Strawberry), a Strawberry Mint Lemonade, and a rotating smoothie and boba lineup.
The cafe was opened by Hannan Alzumel, a Yemeni immigrant in her twenties who taught herself to bake at home, started selling pastries to local Yemeni-owned stores, and then opened her own storefront once health-code rules required a licensed kitchen. She built the business quietly, without her family's initial knowledge — a break from norms in a community where few Yemeni women in Hamtramck run their own storefronts — and now employs young Muslim women from the neighborhood behind the counter.
Joseph Campau Avenue is Hamtramck's main commercial corridor, lined with Yemeni, Bangladeshi, and Bosnian-owned businesses. Awafi's grand opening drew city officials, including Hamtramck's mayor and city council, underscoring how integrated the shop already is in the neighborhood's daily life — a coffeehouse where a virgin mojito is just called a mojito.
