Bright Nights Social

Bright Nights Social is Sam Bail's alcohol-free events platform, running sober dance parties, mixology classes and social gatherings at rotating venues across New York. There is no permanent room and there never has been — its own summary is that it has been going since 2022, has hosted more than a hundred events, is pop-up based with no permanent location, and that all of New York City is its venue. It ran as Third Place Bar until January 2026, when Bail renamed it. Her explanation of why is worth having in full, because it is unusually honest about what these projects actually become: when she first launched Third Place Bar she was not even one month sober, she wanted somewhere to go and there was nowhere, so she set out to create one starting with pop-up events — and three years, nearly a hundred events and thousands of guests later, it had grown into many things, just not an actual bricks-and-mortar bar. So she changed the name.

The positioning matters as much as the events. Bail's own line is that Bright Nights Social is not about sobriety as an identity, but about creating a space where alcohol is not the default — which is a meaningfully different proposition from a recovery space, and the reason its rooms fill with people who are cutting down, driving, pregnant, on medication, or simply not drinking tonight. The programming is deliberately varied rather than bar-shaped: a tea bar, a bagel-making and bagel-eating class, and a full dance party with DJs and a complete non-alcoholic bar to close out Dry January are all recent examples. Bail also presents the NYC's Best Bars for NA awards, which judge the city's non-alcoholic drinks programmes and which several venues in this guide have won or been shortlisted for — an unusual position, since it makes her both an organiser of alcohol-free nightlife and its most active critic.
