Camellia Tea Bar

Camellia Tea Bar sits in Katong Square on East Coast Road, in the Peranakan heartland of eastern Singapore, and it is a deliberately quiet proposition. The name refers to Camellia sinensis, the plant all true tea comes from, and the bar's focus is narrow in the way specialist operations tend to be: Chinese leaf, brewed properly, with time taken over it.

The sourcing runs to the Wuyi Mountains in northern Fujian, and the house buys directly from the farms rather than through intermediaries. Wuyi is a significant origin — it is where yancha, the so-called rock oolongs, are produced, including Da Hong Pao, and it is also the home of lapsang souchong. These are teas with pronounced mineral and roasted character that reward multiple infusions, which is precisely the format the room is set up for. Guests are given time and equipment rather than a single finished cup, and staff will talk through what is being poured.

The stated philosophy is calm tea culture: quality brewing, a relaxed pace, and space to slow down without feeling rushed out of the seat. That positions it very differently from the matcha counters that dominate Singapore's tea scene, which are largely built around takeaway volume. For a non-drinking visitor the trade-off is location and hours — Katong is a fair distance from the Tanjong Pagar and Chinatown bar clusters, and the bar closes at 8pm and does not open at all on Mondays. It is best treated as a destination in its own right, ideally combined with a walk through the Peranakan shophouses along Koon Seng Road nearby, rather than as a substitute for an evening out in town.

That said, the east of the island is badly served for alcohol-free options of any real quality, and Katong is where a great many visitors stay. A tea bar buying single-origin Wuyi leaf direct and giving guests the time to brew it properly is a considerably better proposition than the mall coffee chains that otherwise dominate East Coast Road, and it costs very little to sit for an hour.
