Juju Kitchen & Cocktails sits on L Street in downtown Sacramento, and its spirit-free drinks are on the menu all year rather than appearing each January and vanishing in February — which is the distinction that matters most to anyone who has actually stopped drinking rather than paused.
Endless Summer is the drink to examine. It is built on house-made tepache, the lightly fermented Mexican pineapple-rind drink, then extended with pineapple, lime, serrano chilli syrup, orgeat and soda. Two things about that spec are unusual. First, the tepache: fermenting your own base is real kitchen labour, and it delivers acidity, a faint funk and body that no fruit juice can imitate — the same reason fermentation keeps recurring as the best technique in alcohol-free bartending. Second, the serrano. Chilli heat occupies the palate in a way that reads as intensity, which is precisely what a drink loses when the alcohol comes out.
Falling Up works the autumnal register instead — ginger, apple, lemon, harvest syrup and tonic — with the tonic's quinine supplying bitterness and the ginger supplying bite. Between the two, a non-drinker can have something hot and savoury or something spiced and dry, rather than two variations on sweet.
The hours are the limitation: Tuesday to Saturday, 4pm to 10pm, closed Sunday and Monday. It is a short walk from most of downtown Sacramento and from Dive Bar on K Street, which makes a two-stop evening straightforward for a group where not everyone is drinking.
One practical note on ordering here. Because the spirit-free drinks sit on the main menu rather than a separate card, there is none of the small awkwardness that comes with asking whether anything non-alcoholic is available and watching a bartender think about it. You order by name, like everyone else at the table, and what arrives is a proper drink in proper glassware. That sounds trivial and is not: the most common complaint from people who have stopped drinking is not about the liquid but about being visibly the exception, and a menu that treats zero-proof as ordinary removes the moment entirely.
