On Swann

On Swann occupies a corner of Hyde Park Village, the low-rise shopping and dining district in one of Tampa's oldest neighbourhoods, and has been open since 2016. It runs as a New American restaurant and bar with a leafy patio that carries most of the trade — brunch through dinner, a crowd that skews local and regular rather than destination.

Its non-alcoholic drinks are built to order rather than pre-mixed, and they are built on named alcohol-free spirits, which is the distinction that separates a real programme from a courtesy. The Sober Mule uses CleanCo Clean G with a strawberry-watermelon agave, Giffard orgeat, lemon and ginger beer — a drink with enough acid and length to work through a meal rather than collapsing into sweetness after the first sip. Not Another Spicy Margarita is built on Seedlip Notas de Agave infused with habanero and jalapeno, with agave and lime, and the name is doing something useful: it acknowledges that the spicy margarita is the most over-served drink in America and then makes a good one without alcohol anyway.

The useful thing about On Swann for a non-drinker is its ordinariness. It is not a sober venue and does not market itself to that audience; it is a neighbourhood restaurant that happens to take the category seriously, which means it works for the situation most people actually face — a table of six where one person is not drinking and nobody wants to choose the venue around that fact.

Practical notes: it serves lunch and dinner with a gap in the afternoon, adds brunch at weekends from 11am to 2pm, and the patio is the seat worth asking for. Full bar, full wine list — the spirit-free builds are a genuine part of the menu rather than its character.
