Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink

Michael's Genuine Food & Drink has anchored the Miami Design District since 2007, and is the flagship of chef Michael Schwartz, who won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: South in 2010. The cooking is fresh, local and wood-fired, and the restaurant carries a Bib Gourmand in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide — a long run of relevance in a city whose restaurant scene turns over quickly.

The bar has been making house sodas and considered non-alcoholic drinks for years rather than adding them recently, which is the difference between a programme and a response to a trend. The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau describes it as one of the city's most robust zero-proof programmes, built on house-made sodas, seasonal juice blends and named alcohol-free cocktails.

Two confirmed pours show the range. The No-Proof Bulletproof is built on Lyre's American Malt with cherry-rosemary syrup and lemon — a whiskey-shaped drink rather than a fruit one, which is the harder thing to do without alcohol. Find Your Path uses Pathfinder, the hemp-derived non-alcoholic spirit, with mint, citrus and soda.

House-made sodas deserve particular note. They are the least glamorous item on any bar list and among the most useful to a non-drinker: a made soda is a drink somebody built, served in a proper glass, at a price that signals it counts. It is the difference between being served and being accommodated.

The list sits inside a full-service bar rather than a dedicated alcohol-free venue, which makes it an easy room for a mixed table — a neighbourhood restaurant where the person not drinking has a genuine choice rather than a concession. The Design District location makes it an easy lunch as well as a dinner, and the bar is comfortable to sit at alone.
