Ocean Beach Cafe

Ocean Beach Cafe sits one block from the sand at 734 La Playa Street in the Outer Richmond, and it is the venue most responsible for there being an alcohol-free scene in San Francisco at all. It was founded by Joshua James, a career bartender who took a year off drinking and then built the business he could not find, and it bills itself as the city's first non-alcoholic bar. The cafe operates on three levels at once: an all-day room serving scratch-made food and Four Barrel coffee; a fully alcohol-free bar; and a bottle shop stocking one of the largest retail selections of non-alcoholic beer, wine and spirits in the country. Writing in The San Francisco Standard in December 2023, Astrid Kane called it "the granddaddy of San Francisco's alcohol-free nightlife," noting that it is "where to stock up on supplies to build out a nonalcoholic home bar cart while sitting down for 'Temperance Tastings' and NA mixology classes."

The cocktail list is built rather than assembled from bottles: named pours run $16 and include the Destroyer of Bad Vibes (Melati Classics, The Pathfinder, honey, citrus, All The Bitter orange and cinnamon), the mezcal-inspired Good Buzz Daisy, the Needle In The Groove, the Nuevo Compañero and the Ghia Spritz. The New Pear-Adigm and the booze-free French 75, both listed here previously, are no longer on the card as of August 2026. James also runs a private lounge called Temperance, hourlong Temperance Tastings, mixology classes and an alcohol-free membership programme, Club AF, which together make the venue a community hub rather than only a bar — a distinction that matters for readers who want somewhere to go rather than only something to drink. One thing to know before visiting: alongside coffee, chai and zero-proof cocktails, Ocean Beach Cafe serves kava, a root beverage traditional to the South Pacific. Kava contains no alcohol but it is mildly psychoactive and sedating, and readers in recovery may want to make a deliberate choice about it rather than encounter it unannounced. Hours run daytime rather than late — roughly 8am to 5 or 6pm — so this is a morning-through-afternoon destination, with evening events booked separately.
