Urban Grub sits at 2506 12th Avenue South, on the corner of 12th and Gilmore in the 12 South neighbourhood, in a building that spent its earlier life as a small carwash and took thirteen months to convert. It opened in April 2012 from Jay Pennington, who runs operations, and Billy Inman, who shaped the look of the room, and it trades under the banner "Fresh Fish & Fine Aged Meats" — a Southern seafood-and-grill hybrid built around a fish programme and a wood grill, with fresh-shucked oysters, smoked and grilled meats, and a dining room that stays busy and loud in a part of town where that is the point. Service runs late for the neighbourhood, from 4pm to midnight Tuesday through Thursday and from 10.30am on Sundays for brunch, with reservations through OpenTable.

For non-drinkers the relevant fact is breadth rather than invention. Local guide Nashville Guru singled the bar out for an unusually extensive range of non-alcoholic options, and the list it recorded is deeper on packaged drinks than most restaurants manage: three Athletic Brewing beers — the Lite, Golden Dawn and Run Wild IPA — alongside a BrewDog hazy IPA, an Untitled Art dragon fruit sour, Original Sin sparkling cider, an Infruition sparkling Earl Grey and a Thirst Mutilator hop water. That is a genuine range of styles rather than one token non-alcoholic beer, and it means a non-drinker at a table of drinkers has something to choose between across a long meal. The same source records built mocktails including a Fauxpresso Martini, a Not Aperol Spritz and a Free Spirit of grapefruit, ginger syrup, lime and ginger beer. One honest caveat: Urban Grub does not publish its bar menu in a readable form on its own website, so the mixed drinks above come from a local guide rather than the restaurant, and a second listing site shows different mocktails entirely. The packaged non-alcoholic range is well attested; the specific mocktail names are worth confirming with the bar when you order.

Urban Grub can seem a little over-the-top with all the exposed wood, fire features and tables and booths tucked into every corner of the restaurant, but they still manage to do it right.
