Vintage Books trades from Suite 101 at 3660 Waialae Avenue, on the Kaimukī strip, behind a facade got up as a secondhand bookshop — the bar and restaurant are through the back. The conceit is Prohibition-era, softened with tropical flourishes appropriate to where it actually is, and it functions as a full restaurant as well as a bar, with brunch service at weekends from 10am to 2pm and dinner from 4pm. A note on location, because it matters for anyone navigating: several published guides place Vintage Books in Chinatown. It is in Kaimukī, several miles east, and the confusion probably comes from its own Kaimuki Cruise appearing on lists of downtown drinks.

The spirit-free list is the most technically serious in Honolulu, and the Nogroni is the reason. Most zero-proof menus collapse into sweetness, because sugar and acid are what remain once the spirit is gone and genuine bitterness is hard to build. This one goes the other way, layering three separate commercial zero-proof products — Seedlip Garden for the herbaceous top, Giffard's sirop aperitif and Lyre's aperitif rosso for the bitter-sweet Campari-and-vermouth register — and finishing with expressed orange oil, which is the aromatic step that makes a negroni read as a negroni before it is tasted. Stocking three zero-proof lines at once is a real inventory decision, not a gesture. The Kaimuki Cruise sits at the other end of the range, built on lychee, lemon, mango and Sicilian lemonade for something bright and tropical, and a botanical London Tonic covers the guest who wants length and bitterness without sweetness. Together they cover the three things a spirit-free drinker normally cannot get in one room. Kaimukī also puts the bar within a short walk of Leahi Health, which makes the neighbourhood the most complete alcohol-free stretch in the city outside the kava rooms.
