Bar Contra occupies the narrow, dimly lit space on Orchard Street that once housed the acclaimed tasting restaurant Contra, and it has become one of the Lower East Side's most serious destinations for non-drinkers and drinkers alike. The bar's non-alcoholic program is not an afterthought menu section—it is built with the same technical rigor as everything else here, using liquid nitrogen, house ferments, clarified juices, and uncommon botanicals like galangal, Mexican tarragon, and wormwood. The inaugural NYC Best Bars for NA Awards 2025, presented by Bright Nights Social and Boisson, named Bar Contra a winner specifically for this approach, recognizing a zero-proof program that goes well beyond juice and soda.
The cocktail program is the work of co-founder Dave Arnold, whose résumé includes founding the Museum of Food and Drink and a long reputation for laboratory-grade bar technique. The menu is organized by preparation method—shaken, stirred, carbonated, on the rocks—and the non-alcoholic options receive the same treatment. The Saltair, the bar's signature alcoholic drink, arrives finished with liquid nitrogen and a Modelito sidecar; the zero-proof option that has drawn attention from The Infatuation is described as a bracing melted creamsicle with grapefruit pulp floating on top—not a juice, but a composed drink. The Firefly Mule rounds out a small but deliberate roster of cocktails that change with the seasons.
Bar Contra was named a James Beard Awards semifinalist for Best New Bar in 2025, a newly created category, which speaks to how quickly this two-year-old room has registered nationally. The space is compact—a long bar up front and low leather booths in the back—with casual dress and no pretense. Reservations are accepted for tables (standard 90-minute turns), but bar seats are walk-in, and regulars tend to prefer them for the full experience. It is a strong pick for a date, a small group of friends who span the drinking-and-not-drinking divide, or anyone who wants proof that a zero-proof drink in New York can be genuinely interesting.
