Bar Moga takes its name from moga — modan gāru, the "modern girl" of 1920s Japan — and builds a whole room around the Taisho period, when Japan absorbed Western food and drink and made something distinct out of both. The kitchen serves yōshoku, the Western-influenced comfort dishes that emerged from that exchange, and the bar works traditional Japanese spirits, shochu and Japanese whisky, into recipes drawn from the American prohibition era. Jazz plays. The whole thing is a coherent argument rather than a theme.

It appears in this guide because it won its category at the inaugural NYC's Best Bars for NA Awards, judged in 2025 and reported by Time Out, for a non-alcoholic menu the judges called narrative-driven and Japanese cocktail-inspired.

That phrasing is the important part. The most common failure in non-alcoholic bar programmes is that the NA list is conceptually orphaned — the alcoholic menu tells a story about a place or a period, and then the zero-proof section is three fruit-forward drinks with no relationship to any of it. Ordering from it feels like being handed the children's menu. A bar recognised for a narrative-driven NA list is one where the drinks without alcohol belong to the same idea as the drinks with it, which is precisely what makes not drinking feel unremarkable rather than conspicuous.

The honest caveat: Bar Moga is a full cocktail bar and serves alcohol, including a deep shochu and Japanese whisky list. Anyone who needs a room with no alcohol in it should look at the fully alcohol-free venues in this guide instead. Anyone who wants a genuinely considered drink while their friends have a highball will do very well here.

Hours are 5pm to midnight Monday through Thursday, to 12:30am on Friday and Saturday, and 5pm to 10pm on Sunday, with an additional weekend lunch service from noon to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday. The West Houston Street address puts it on the edge of Greenwich Village and SoHo, within a few minutes' walk of several other venues in this guide.

Over in Greenwich Village, Bar Moga offers a narrative-driven, booze-free menu inspired by Japanese cocktail tradition.
