Death & Co Los Angeles is the first West Coast outpost of the cocktail bar that opened in Manhattan's East Village on New Year's Eve 2006 and became, in short order, one of the most influential rooms in American drinking. The Los Angeles location arrived at 818 East 3rd Street in the Arts District at the end of 2019, from David Kaplan, Alex Day and Devon Tarby alongside Ravi DeRossi — a team that had already opened the Normandie Club, Bibo Ergo Sum, the Walker Inn and Honeycut in the city. The main bar is a subterranean lounge running a seasonal menu of roughly twenty-five drinks; a separate walk-up Standing Room bar, with a much shorter list, operates Thursday to Saturday. The kitchen is more serious than bar snacks implies, running oysters with calamansi mignonette, yellowfin tuna crudo with mango shrub and coconut milk, wagyu steak tartare, buttermilk fried jidori chicken with hot honey and Thai basil, and a lamb burger with sumac pickles.
The reason this room matters to non-drinkers is structural. Death & Co explains that its menu is comprised of six sections, starting from the lightest and most refreshing cocktails, followed by more spirituous and zero-proof drinks — so "Zero Proof" is a named section of the main list, ordered alongside everything else, not a separate card produced on request. The current list runs three drinks. Cruise Control ($17) combines Seedlip Notas de Agave and Giffard non-alcoholic aperitif with strawberry shrub, grapefruit, honey, lime and fizz. Tenth Planet ($16) builds a Thai tea cordial with Ritual zero-proof rum, pineapple, cinnamon and yuzu. Living Dead ($18) is the most spirit-forward, using Ritual zero-proof gin and Wilderton Earthen with pistachio, lemon and New Orleans-style non-alcoholic bitters. Directly beneath them the printed menu carries a non-alcoholic wine and beer block that is deeper than most bars manage: NON's salted raspberry and chamomile and its cherry and coffee sparklings at $16, Lyre's Classico sparkling at $14, Athletic's Mexican-style Copper and Free Wave hazy IPA at $9, and Suntory All-Free at $7. The bar opens at 6pm nightly, to 2am on Friday and Saturday, with reservations through SevenRooms.
