Hamsa opened in Rice Village on May 11, 2022, the second restaurant concept from Sof Hospitality, the group behind steakhouse Doris Metropolitan. Co-founders Itai Ben Eli and Itamar Levy built the restaurant with chef Sash Kurgan, a fellow Sof partner; pastry chef Michal Michaeli runs the dessert program and general manager and sommelier Melissa Rogers oversees the wine list and floor. "Hamsa is a concept we always wanted to do, which is more of the food we bring from back home," Ben Eli told CultureMap Houston ahead of opening. The restaurant sits beside Sof Hospitality's own Badolina Bakery & Café in the heart of Rice Village.
The Mediterranean menu draws on Israeli and broader Middle Eastern influences, anchored by hummus, crispy falafel, and shawarma alongside larger plates like whole grilled branzino, lamb spare ribs, and arak mussels, built for sharing rather than a traditional appetizer-entree structure.
The beverage program runs deep, with more than 100 wine selections — including a Middle Eastern section highlighting Israeli and Lebanese producers — plus a full arak-cocktail list. Alongside it, the restaurant offers a set of named zero-proof drinks: Tea Time (yerba mate, plum, lemon, ginger beer), Put Your Cukes Up (basil, shishito, cucumber, pink peppercorns, lime, Topo Chico), When Mangos Tango (mango, habanero, pineapple, rosemary, lime), and Strawberries in Paradise (strawberry, lemon, grapefruit, mint, Topo Chico). CultureMap Houston singled the zero-proof options out in its 2026 Dry January roundup for their "inventive flavor combinations."
