Saint Arnold Brewing Company was founded in Houston in 1994 by Brock Wagner and Kevin Bartol, both Rice University graduates. Now billed as Texas' oldest craft brewery, Saint Arnold has twice been named the Brewers Association's national Brewery of the Year in the large-brewery category, in 2017 and again in 2023 at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, where it also won gold medals for its Elissa IPA and Fancy Lawnmower golden ale. The brewery's production facility sits at 2000 Lyons Ave in the Near Northside, just north of Downtown Houston.

In July 2018, Saint Arnold opened an attached Beer Garden & Restaurant designed around six church-inspired 'chapel' murals by Houston artists — what co-founder Brock Wagner called 'a culmination of a pipe dream I had a long time ago but never thought it would be a reality.' The full-service restaurant serves scratch-made pizza, burgers, sandwiches, and bar food alongside the house beer, inside a dog- and family-friendly outdoor space with lawn games.

The non-alcoholic program grew out of that family-friendly bent: Saint Arnold started making its own cane-sugar Root Beer for the kids and non-drinkers who came along on brewery tours, later adding a Ginger Beer in June 2022. In July 2018 it also debuted a taproom-only hop water called Hop2O, popular enough that it was canned and relaunched under the Hop Spring name in January 2023 — an alcohol-free, gluten-free sparkling water made from carbonated water, Citra and Amarillo hops, and phosphoric acid, with zero calories and 0% ABV. All three drinks get their own 'Non-Alcoholic' listing on the Beer Garden menu alongside housemade lemonade, cherry limeade, iced tea, and coffee, and Hop Spring is now also sold in Houston-area grocery and liquor stores.

Winning Brewery of the Year is pretty gosh darn gratifying. Winning a second one is unexpected because it's so rare.
