Kava Mama

Kava Mama has been open since 2017 in the Railyard complex at 448 Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard in Mechanicsville, and bills itself as Atlanta's first sober kava bar. Angie Lizarraga founded it after encountering kava while supporting her son through alcohol addiction, and the bar is built around that history rather than around a trend. Co-owner Shaun Capuy, known to regulars as Kava Papa, runs it alongside her. It is strictly alcohol-free.

The kava is the reason to go and the reason it has lasted. It is prepared traditionally — hand-squeezed and served from a coconut shell — and sourced directly from farmers in the Pacific Islands, with Fijian, Vanuatu, Tongan and Papua New Guinean varieties rotating through. Every batch is lab-tested for authenticity, which is not a marketing line in this category: kava quality varies enormously by cultivar and processing, and noble-versus-tudei sourcing is a genuine safety question rather than a connoisseur's distinction. Beyond the traditional preparation there are flavoured kavas, blended Kavaritas, and therapeutic and kratom teas.

The room is small, muralled with island ceremony scenes, dog-friendly and deliberately unslick, with game nights, live music and talent shows on a regular calendar. It is open daily from noon to 11pm. As one regular put it to Fresh Take Georgia, the appeal is having somewhere to simply be at nine in the evening without the evening being about drinking — which is the whole thesis of the place, and the reason the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Fresh Take Georgia have both profiled it as a hub for the city's sober community.

The standard caution applies and matters here more than most, given who this bar was built for. Kava is psychoactive — a mild sedative and anxiolytic — and should not be combined with alcohol or with sedating prescriptions; it has also been associated with liver concerns in heavy or prolonged use, so speak to a clinician if you take regular medication. Kratom, sold here as tea, is a different substance again, with a more contested risk profile that includes physical dependence. For anyone in recovery, those are distinctions worth making before ordering rather than after.

A practical note for a first visit, since traditional kava is not what most people expect. It is served in a coconut shell, it is drunk in one go rather than sipped, it tastes earthy and faintly medicinal, and it numbs the mouth briefly — all of which is normal and none of which is a sign anything is wrong. The effect builds slowly, so people new to it commonly assume nothing is happening and order again too quickly. Staff here are used to walking newcomers through it; the bar has been doing this since 2017, which is longer than most.
