Kavasutra is the largest kava chain in the United States, running more than thirty locations, and the Semoran Boulevard room covers east Orlando. It opens at 8am and closes at 2am, seven days a week, and serves no alcohol at any point.
The format across the group is consistent and genuinely bar-shaped: a proper counter, shells poured to order, long hours, and a regular crowd rather than passing trade. That consistency is part of the appeal — a Kavasutra in Orlando works the same way as one in Denver or on the Treasure Coast, which for someone travelling and not drinking is a real convenience. This is a bar you can walk into in an unfamiliar city and know what you are getting.
Kava is the ground root of Piper methysticum, a shrub native to the South Pacific islands, prepared as a cold water infusion and drunk socially across Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga and Samoa for roughly three thousand years. It contains no alcohol. It tastes earthy and bitter, numbs the lips and tongue on the first mouthful, and is mildly sedative rather than intoxicating in the way alcohol is. Kava exhibits reverse tolerance, meaning regular drinkers typically need less rather than more to feel it, so a first visit is best taken slowly across an hour or two rather than treated like a round of shots.
Orlando now supports a substantial spread of these rooms — SODO Kava, House of Mana, Pacific Rootz, Z Co-Space, Z Tiki, Kava Cove, Elevate, the two Kava Culture sites and both Kavasutra branches — which makes it one of the better-served metros in the country for anyone who wants a late night out without alcohol.
The caution for this chain is not something it hides, and it deserves to be stated as plainly as the chain states it. **Kavasutra markets itself as America's premier kava AND kratom bar.** Kratom is a co-equal half of the business here, not a side listing tucked at the bottom of a menu. It is the leaf of Mitragyna speciosa, a Southeast Asian tree, and its principal alkaloids act on the opioid receptors; regular use produces tolerance and a real withdrawal syndrome, several US states prohibit it outright, and concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine products derived from it are the subject of active federal scheduling action. Kava carries no comparable dependence profile.
For a great many people, the entire reason for walking into a kava bar rather than a pub is to avoid substances that can get a grip. In a room where kratom is half the trade, that means ordering specifically, by name, and asking what is in the shell — which the staff will answer directly.
