The city tried a dedicated sober bar — The Dry Mill, downtown, opened by two friends in recovery in 2022 — and it closed after seven months, and nothing has replaced it. What grew instead is a run of printed zero-proof sections on serious drinks lists, and they are concentrated on about a hundred metres of North High Street: The Guild House prints a six-deep ZERO PROOF list with Seedlip, Lyre's and a bottle of alcohol-removed sparkling, Soul at The Joseph builds four zero-proof drinks alongside its Lost Cocktails of Columbus programme, and Marcella's is directly across the road. Lincoln Social's ninth-floor rooftop gives its Spiritless section the same weight as its low-ABV band. The other centre of gravity is the Brewery District, where Law Bird — a 2025 James Beard semifinalist voted the city's best NA drink menu by Columbus Underground readers — puts named N/A cocktails on every menu it prints and will build most of the full-proof list without alcohol at a lower price, and Cobra a few doors up uses its no-proof drinks to carry the same Asian-American flavours as the rest of the bar. Casa Cacao is Columbus' first kava and cacao bar, opened in 2024 by Ayala Wolak on East Hudson Street in Old North Columbus. No alcohol is served. The menu is built around two plant ingredients — kava, a root native to the Pacific Islands that is prepared as a drink for its relaxant effect, and ceremonial-grade cacao, ground to a paste and spiced. Alongside them sit a full espresso programme, loose teas, kombucha, hot chocolate and alcohol-free wine. Kava is a psychoactive botanical rather than an inert soft drink: Wolak has said each drink carries roughly a tablespoon and a half of kava powder, and concentrated shots are sold alongside the milder 12-ounce teas. The room occupies a long-dormant building that has been a theatre, a barbershop and a church, and it runs $5 kava on Thursday and Saturday evenings.

Better Beverage is a fully non-alcoholic bottle shop serving the Columbus metro, founded by Mary LaPlaca and based in Westerville. It has no storefront: the shop trades through pop-ups, event bars, tastings, local delivery and a wholesale programme for bars and restaurants, with orders taken by email. Everything it stocks is alcohol-free, and the buying policy is unusually explicit — LaPlaca curates ready-to-drink brands that are women-, LGBTQ+-, veteran-, minority- or family-owned, or that work to a sustainability standard, rather than simply carrying whatever distributes into Ohio. LaPlaca has written that Al-Anon changed her life and that she started the business after realising Columbus had no shop dedicated to non-alcoholic drinks, bringing two decades of work as an artist to the venture.

Lincoln Social Rooftop is a Cameron Mitchell bar on the ninth floor of 711 North High Street in the Short North, with a retractable roof, a fire pit and skyline views. It is a 21-and-over room. The cocktail menu is organised into four bands — Bold & Boozy, Easy Drinking, Sessions: Low ABV and Classics — and one of them, headed Spiritless, is entirely non-alcoholic. That list runs eight deep and is built rather than poured: a Mean & Green of serrano, celery, agave, cilantro and lime; No Secrets, which combines Töst sparkling tea with Giffard aperitif and lemon; an Espresso & Tonic; and a Blueberry Iced Tea infused with earl grey. Its cocktail programme is built around a research-led list called the Lost Cocktails of Columbus, which revives drinks tied to the city's own bar history — the Deshler, the Kahiki Coffee Grog and the Midwestern Negroni among them. A separate printed section headed ZERO-PROOF BEVERAGES carries four built drinks rather than a list of sodas: the Casablanca Fog and the Lawn Dart, both made with Garden Spirit, kiwi, kefir and agave; an Orange Blossom of Lyre's non-alcoholic gin with house orange cordial and New Orleans N/A bitters; and an Old Old Fashioned using Lyre's non-alcoholic whiskey with ginger and non-alcoholic orange bitters.

Huli Huli Tiki Lounge is the original of Dustin Sun's two Columbus-area tiki bars, occupying a former antique shop in downtown Powell, north of the city. Tiki is a format that translates unusually well to zero-proof drinking — the classics are built on fruit, syrup, spice and dilution as much as on rum — and Huli Huli leans into that rather than treating it as a compromise. Alcohol-free versions of the house drinks are made to order, including the Honolulu Mule and a zero-proof Blue Hawaii sold as the Untrod Beach, and there are non-alcoholic builds designed as such: the Baby Aspirin, a blend of pineapple, orange and cream of coconut served in a coconut cup, and the Seafoam Sipper of cream soda, pandan and mint. The second Huli Huli Tiki Lounge opened on 20 May 2026 in the long-vacant Jury Room space at 22 East Mound Street, downtown — a room with a bar lineage running back to the nineteenth century, now fitted out as a tiki lounge by owner Dustin Sun. The drinks programme follows the Powell original, which means the alcohol-free side is unusually deep for a new opening: house cocktails including the Honolulu Mule, the Blue Hawaiian and the Baby Aspirin are all served in alcohol-free versions built to order rather than swapped for a soft drink. Because tiki drinks are constructed from fruit, spice, syrup and dilution, the zero-proof versions read as complete rather than hollowed out. The downtown room keeps shorter hours than Powell, opening Wednesday to Saturday evenings only.

DogTap is BrewDog's flagship United States brewery and taproom, on Gender Road in Canal Winchester at the south-eastern edge of the Columbus metro. It matters to non-alcoholic drinkers because BrewDog brews its alcohol-free beer in-house rather than buying it in: the taproom pours the brewery's own sub-0.5% ABV range, including the Juice Club line made with real fruit juice in Citrus Crush, Raspberry Tart, Lime and Pineapple Breeze. The site runs brewery tours, a kitchen and dog-friendly patios. It should be said that BrewDog's Columbus footprint contracted sharply in 2026: the company was sold to Tilray, and its Short North and Franklinton taprooms both closed abruptly in March that year. DogTap and the New Albany location remained open, along with the bar inside John Glenn airport.

"Sober-friendly" covers a wider range of venues than people usually realize.
