The Intan

The Intan, whose name means rose-cut diamond, is Singapore's first home museum, opened by antique collector and curator Alvin Yapp in the Joo Chiat/Katong heritage district. The two-storey shophouse-turned-museum is packed with Peranakan artefacts, kebaya, beadwork and embroidery made by Nyonya women, and antique furniture, all shown in the setting of a genuine lived-in Straits Chinese home rather than a conventional gallery.

The venue is best known to the wider public through its 60-minute Tea Experience, a by-appointment session in which Yapp personally walks guests through the collection and explains Peranakan wedding customs and daily rituals before the visit closes with The Intan Signature Tea and an assortment of traditional nyonya kueh. The entire experience is alcohol-free, making it a rare heritage-led tea option for non-drinkers in a city dominated by cocktail culture. Sittings are held Friday at 4:00pm, Saturday at 10:00am and 4:00pm, and Sunday at 4:00pm, with private visits arranged by email.

The Intan was voted Best Overall Experience at the Museum Roundtable Awards and has been featured internationally on CNN Travel, the Discovery Channel and National Geographic. It is a small, intimate space, so tea sittings are capped and booking ahead is essential.

What separates The Intan from a conventional museum is that it is genuinely a home, and Yapp is genuinely the host. In his own words on the museum's site, a deep love for all things Peranakan led him to devote his home to the culture's treasures, and to share a glimpse of the yesteryear with visitors as guests in that home. The collection grew from small objects that caught his eye into something larger and more diverse, and it is arranged as a lived-in Straits Chinese house rather than as a gallery with labels.

For a non-drinker deciding how to spend an evening or a weekend afternoon, this is a genuinely different proposition from a bar or a cafe. It is a booked, hosted, sit-down experience with a beginning and an end, built around tea and kueh and conversation — the social architecture of going out, without alcohol anywhere near it. Visitors consistently describe the sessions as closer to a gathering than a presentation, and the host's enthusiasm for the material as the thing that carries the hour.

The practical constraints follow from that. Sittings are small and capped, held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons with an additional Saturday morning slot, and private visits are arranged by email. Book well ahead.
