What Sober October is, and what it is like in Nashville

Sober October is a Macmillan Cancer Support fundraiser, launched in the UK in 2014 as Go Sober for October, where participants take sponsorship for staying dry through the month. Unlike Dry January it is explicitly a charity challenge rather than a reset — people do it in teams, for a cause, and usually tell everyone they are doing it.

October is the better month for this and almost nobody says so. The weather still allows a patio, the autumn drinks menus are the most interesting of the year for non-drinkers — spiced, warm, orchard-led builds that do not need alcohol to work — and going out sober through Halloween is a far softer test than surviving a January in the cold. The venues below are ordered by how much of their menu is genuinely zero-proof rather than an afterthought.

The autumn advantage is real and worth planning around. Apple, pear, fig, chai, maple and burnt-sugar flavours carry a drink on their own, so an October mocktail rarely tastes like something is missing the way a summer citrus build can. Cider houses and taprooms are at their best, hot drinks come back onto menus, and a bar that has spent September rewriting its list is far more likely to have thought about the no-alcohol column than one coasting through August. If you drink one thing this month, make it a spiced or orchard build rather than a fruit-and-soda mocktail.

Because Sober October is a sponsored challenge rather than a private reset, it also tends to be social in a way January is not — teams, workmates, whole friendship groups doing it together and telling everyone. That changes what you need from a venue. Instead of somewhere you can quietly not drink, you want somewhere that can seat six, take a booking, and serve a round where nobody's glass looks like the consolation prize. The larger rooms and full-service restaurants below handle that better than a small cocktail bar will.

Deir Cafe Antioch

Antioch

Cafe
NA Program Strength: 5 of 5?·House-crafted NA cocktails

Deir Cafe Antioch is the second location of Yousef Gumiza's fully alcohol-free Palestinian coffeehouse, on Haywood Lane in the Antioch neighbourhood of Nashville, and it is the one that keeps the late hours: open seven days a week from 9am until 1am. It took over the former La Princesa Market space, first reported in January 2026. The menu follows the original in Wedgewood-Houston - Mediterranean-inflected signature lattes including the Baklawa latte and the Golden Lotus with biscoff and caramel, fruit refreshers named in Arabic such as Roman for pomegranate and Ward for rose, matcha, smoothies and pastries. No alcohol is served at any hour, which is the point: it was built as a night cafe for a community that does not drink.

Confirmed brands on its own store include Athletic Brewing, Best Day Brewing, Go Brewing, Untitled Art, Dromme, and Prima Pavé. Passage Kava Lounge is a fully alcohol-free, 21+ kava and botanical lounge in Madison, tucked in the EastSide Bowl plaza on Gallatin Pike S. Owned by Ryan and Warren Holding, it opened in 2024 and bills itself as the only Nashville-area bar dealing in zero alcohol. The Victorian-inspired room pours traditional kava (including a communal Bula ceremony), botanical teas, coffee, kratom, kombucha, and mocktails, with house kava drinks like Royal Cinnamon, Velvet Shortcake, and Berry Chocolate. Owner Ryan Holding describes it as "a mix of a coffee shop and bar, but without the bar fights," emphasizing connection over intoxication. The lounge programs nightly events: live music on Mondays and Tuesdays, trivia Wednesdays, and karaoke Thursdays. In its first months open, it placed second for Best New Business in the Nashville Scene's Best of Nashville 2024 awards.

Killjoy Berry Hill

Bottle Shop
NA Program Strength: 5 of 5?·2 NA brands

Killjoy Berry Hill is the second location of Killjoy, the alcohol-free bottle shop founded by Stephanie Styll, who stopped drinking in 2020 and launched the business in 2023. After starting as a Wedgewood-Houston pop-up and opening a retail store in East Nashville, Styll expanded to Berry Hill — the neighborhood where the idea began — opening this roughly 1,000-square-foot shop in October 2025. Like the East Nashville store, it sells exclusively non-alcoholic beer, wine, spirits, and functional beverages (including adaptogenic, THC/CBD, and herbal drinks), and offers on-site sampling so customers can taste before buying. Killjoy bills itself as Nashville's first booze-free beverage shop and, per Styll, the only alcohol-free retail business of its kind in the city. The shop's stated mission is to help change the culture around drinking in Nashville.

The Mockery

Germantown

Bar
NA Program Strength: 5 of 5?·House-crafted NA cocktails

CHECK BEFORE YOU TRAVEL — we cannot confirm this venue is still trading. The Mockery is a fully alcohol-free bar and non-alcoholic bottle shop that operated inside the Nashville Farmers' Market in Germantown, pairing a working bar with retail so guests could drink on site or take bottles home. Its own channel describes the range as non-alcoholic wines, beer, sparkling-wine cocktails and classic cocktails, made by hand to order, on Farmers' Market trading days rather than bar hours — Friday to Sunday, closing in the afternoon. Three things now point the other way. Its website domain no longer resolves at all. It does not appear anywhere in the Nashville Farmers' Market's own current merchant directory, which does list the market house's other restaurants and shops by name. And we can find no dated activity — no post, review or listing — newer than early 2025. Its Instagram account does still exist. No closure has been announced anywhere, so we have kept the listing rather than remove a business that may simply be dormant or have moved, but message the bar before making a trip.

Deir Cafe

Wedgewood-Houston

Cafe
NA Program Strength: 4 of 5?·House-crafted NA cocktails

Deir Cafe is a fully alcohol-free Palestinian coffeehouse on Hagan Street in Wedgewood-Houston, open seven days a week from 7am to 6pm. Owner Yousef Gumiza named it after Deir al-Balah, his family's city in Gaza, and built it as a community room as much as a cafe: it keeps a dedicated prayer space alongside the counter. The drinks are Mediterranean-inflected rather than standard third-wave - a Baklawa latte, a Golden Lotus latte with biscoff and caramel, a Strawberry Dubai Chocolate latte, a Banana Spice latte - plus fruit refreshers named in Arabic: Roman for pomegranate, Ward for rose, Khokh for peach. Matcha, smoothies and pastries fill out the list. No alcohol is served. A second Deir Cafe operates on Haywood Lane in Antioch.

Redemption Bar

Downtown (Lower Broadway)

Cocktail Bar
NA Program Strength: 4 of 5?·House-crafted NA cocktails

Redemption Bar is country artist Ashley McBryde's NA-forward bar, opened in August 2025 on the fifth floor of Eric Church's Chief's on Lower Broadway in downtown Nashville. Inspired by McBryde's own path to sobriety (she is nearly four years sober), the bar centers an 18-drink zero-proof cocktail menu "composed like a setlist," with each drink named after lyrics that carried her forward — including Flickerin' Flames of Hell, Martini McBryde, Gospel Night, and The Devil I Know. The bar takes its name from McBryde's song "Redemption." Alcohol is also served, since "everyone is welcome." Beyond the drinks, the space features an intimate troubadour-style stage built for solo or duo singer-songwriter sets. Billed by the venue as "Broadway's first NA-focused bar," it offers a sober-friendly alternative on a famously alcohol-soaked strip, with a full food menu alongside the zero-proof and alcoholic lists.

The Fox Bar & Cocktail Club

East Nashville (Inglewood)

Cocktail Bar
NA Program Strength: 4 of 5?·2 NA brands

The Fox Bar & Cocktail Club is a plush 1,000-square-foot craft cocktail bar in East Nashville's Inglewood stretch, tucked behind an Italian restaurant on Gallatin Pike. It opened on 28 September 2017 from Bryan Rushton and Andrew Cook, longtime music-industry friends and Massachusetts natives, in a room fitted out with reclaimed wood from Nashville-area houses. Food & Wine named it one of the 10 Best U.S. Bars in 2023, Eater Nashville made it Bar of the Year the same year, and USA Today's 2026 list called it one of the city's strongest cocktail programs. Its non-alcoholic drinks are built with the same technique as the full menu and, importantly, they rotate with the seasons rather than sitting still — the current three are the East Coast Inferno (Sanbittèr Red, orange juice, Old Bay, habanero, lemon), Pêche Mode (Almave Ámbar non-alcoholic tequila, peach, lime, salted honey) and Duck Hunt (duck fat Lapsang Souchong, The Pathfinder, cherry, BBQ bitters), all $12.

Le Loup

Germantown

Cocktail Bar
NA Program Strength: 4 of 5?·House-crafted NA cocktails

Le Loup is a vintage-inspired craft cocktail bar from restaurateur Ford Fry's Rocket Farm Restaurants group, opened in early 2022 in Nashville's Germantown neighbourhood above its sister restaurant The Optimist. The cocktail programme was built by Kenneth Vanhooser, a Nashville native who spent a decade working in New York. The room is deep green marble and rich colour under a custom underwater mural by Rebecca Green — The Infatuation summed up the effect as the distinct feeling you're submerged in a submarine — and the food is seafood-leaning: bluefin tuna belly, West Coast uni, smoked fish dip with trout roe. The bar keeps a short section headed "Zero Proof", currently two made-to-order drinks at $8 each: Lift to the Scaffold (lemon, mint, cucumber, alfalfa, tonic) and Four (grapefruit, calpico, pineapple, ginger, chili). Athletic's Atletica zero-alcohol beer is $6.
