Brasserie 19

Brasserie 19 has traded on West Gray in River Oaks for over a decade, working the French brasserie format — steak frites, plateaux of shellfish, a wine list long enough to be the reason people book. It is precisely the sort of restaurant where not drinking is most awkward, because the wine is not an accompaniment to the evening but a large part of its declared purpose.

Which is why the zero-proof list matters more here than it would at a casual bar. Three drinks are built on Ritual's alcohol-free spirits, and each targets a specific classic. The No-jito takes Ritual's rum alternative with fresh mint and soda — a mojito without the rum's sugar-cane sweetness, which in practice makes it drier and more refreshing than the original. The Spicy Paloma runs Ritual's tequila alternative against jalapeño and grapefruit; grapefruit's bitterness and the chilli's heat together supply the palate-clearing sharpness that a rich brasserie menu genuinely needs, and this is the one to order alongside anything fried. The French "O"-75 is the most interesting choice, rebuilding the French 75 — normally gin, lemon and champagne — on an alcohol-free base, which is a harder trick than it sounds because the drink's whole character depends on the dryness of the sparkling wine.

Houston Press named all three in its Dry January guide for 2026, which remains the best single survey of where the city's zero-proof drinking actually happens.

The practical point for a table is this: when the sommelier comes round and the rest of the party is choosing a bottle, the difference between a restaurant with three named alcohol-free drinks on the printed list and one without is the difference between ordering in one sentence and having a conversation about what you can be made. Brasserie 19 runs to eleven on Friday and Saturday, ten midweek, and serves from eleven in the morning, so it works for lunch as readily as for a long dinner.
