The name is older than the company. Lion Brewery was founded in London in 1836 on the banks of the Thames and spent a century shipping India Pale Ale and other ales to trading posts across the globe, including Asia, before the site was demolished in 1949. In 2018 a group of friends with a passion for brewing revived it in Singapore, the Lion City, and in 2021 the company opened its flagship taproom and brewpub in a heritage building at 36 Club Street. Time Out's 2024 review counts 25 taps, including English hand-pumps, alongside pool tables, live sport on large screens and a speakeasy hidden behind a false refrigerator. The core range is a German-style Island Lager, Straits Pale Ale, The Boss IPA and a nitro stout, with monthly Brewlab seasonals such as a chilli padi pilsner and a rosella lager. One house tradition should be stated plainly for readers who avoid drinking culture: Pressure Hour, in which a gong signals a free-flow beer window for the room.
The reason it appears in this guide is a single tap. Free Hit XPA is the brewery's own non-alcoholic extra pale ale, and the brewery has written about why it took the challenge on: hop-forward styles carry citrus, pine and tropical fruit that cover the absence of alcohol, and the bitterness balances leftover sweetness. The beer menu lists it at 0.5% ABV and 25 IBU with gentle bitterness, a blend of tropical fruits and a citrus aroma, at S$8.50 for a 355ml pour and S$11 for 473ml; the brewery markets it as its 0% edition, so ask the bar if the distinction matters to you. As of mid-2025 it was available only on draught, at this brewpub and a handful of other venues, which makes Club Street the reliable place to find it. There is no wider zero-proof list beyond the usual soft drinks, and the gastropub kitchen runs a weekend roast. Hours published by the taproom are Monday to Thursday 3pm to 11pm, Friday and Saturday 11.30am to 1am and Sunday 11.30am to 11pm, with happy hour on selected pints until 7pm.
