Tea Chapter

Tea Chapter has been operating out of two conserved shophouses on Neil Road since 1989, which makes it one of the longest-running tea houses in Singapore and by some distance the most recognised. The building is part of the appeal: guests remove their shoes and sit at low tables on the upper floors, in rooms that have been kept deliberately quiet and unmodernised. Downstairs there is a retail counter selling leaf, ware and gift sets, and the shop does a substantial trade in its own blends.

The format is self-brewing under guidance. Rather than being handed a finished cup, guests are given a gongfu set — gaiwan or small clay pot, fairness pitcher, scent and drinking cups — and taken through the steps by staff, then left to run their own infusions for as long as they like. The leaf list covers the usual Chinese categories, with oolongs particularly well represented, and the house also runs structured tea appreciation classes for people who want the theory rather than just the drink. Light snacks are available, but the tea is the point.

For a non-drinker the practical value is the evening trade. Tea Chapter runs to 9pm on most nights and to 10:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays, so it functions as a genuine place to take someone for an evening rather than an afternoon stop that closes at five. It sits a short walk from the Neil Road and Bukit Pasoh cluster of cocktail bars, which makes it an easy substitute when the rest of a group is heading somewhere licensed. The house also trades on a piece of history: Queen Elizabeth II visited in 1989, and the spot where she sat is still marked in the room.

The royal visit is also the origin of the house signature. Tea Chapter's own account records that the teahouse was visited by Queen Elizabeth II not long after it opened, and that the Imperial Golden Cassia — a light-oxidised oolong from Fujian — became the tea it serves to distinguished guests from that point on. It is still the leaf to order if you want the thing the house is actually known for, rather than working through the list at random.

The business began in October 1989 as a joint venture between thirteen tea enthusiasts who had been shown a proper Chinese tea ceremony by a Taiwanese friend and were captivated by it. That founding detail explains the format better than any description of the room: the place was built by people learning the practice, which is why guests are handed the equipment and taught rather than served a finished cup, and why the tea appreciation workshops are a core part of the trade rather than a tourist add-on.

Eatbook, reviewing the teahouse, described stepping inside to a charming and cosy setup made for tea appreciation, with the Oriental Room upstairs alongside Korean- and Japanese-style seating areas. Prices for the premium leaf are not low, and that is the honest expectation to set — this is closer in cost to a round of cocktails than to a cafe order, which is rather the point when it is standing in for one.
