Tea Room by Ki-setsu

Tea Room by Ki-setsu is an offshoot of the Ki-setsu group, and it takes a deliberately different approach from the walk-in tea houses elsewhere in Singapore. There is no counter and no drop-in service. Sessions are reserved in advance for two to five guests, run for approximately an hour, and cost in the region of S$68 per person. The room sits on the seventh floor of Orchard Plaza, an older mall on Orchard Road, which gives the whole thing the character of something you have to know about to find.

What the money buys is guided gongfu cha with genuinely rare material. The house sources directly from origin rather than through the wholesale market, with leaf from Bulang Mountain and Yiwu — two of the most respected pu-erh producing areas in Yunnan, and names that carry real weight with anyone who follows Chinese tea. A host runs the session, brewing through successive short infusions and talking through how the character of the leaf shifts from the first steeping to the eighth. That progression is the substance of the experience, and it is closer in structure to a tasting flight than to ordering a pot.

For a non-drinking visitor, this is the Singapore equivalent of booking a seat at a chef's counter. It is not a place to spend an unplanned evening — it must be reserved, and the format is fixed — but it is a proper occasion built entirely around a non-alcoholic drink, taken seriously, with someone knowledgeable talking you through it. That combination is rare anywhere. Because the sessions are appointment-only and the room is small, booking well ahead through the group's own site is essential, and the format suits a pair or a small group rather than a large party.
