Writers Bar occupies the front corner of the Grand Lobby inside Raffles Hotel Singapore, the 1887 colonial landmark and national monument on Beach Road. Behind a gleaming brass counter, the grandly arched room is dressed in palm-leaf wallpaper, tufted leather sofas and objets d'art, trading on what Food & Wine called its 'gentleman explorer' energy. The bar's cocktail programme is themed around the celebrated novelists who passed through the hotel's doors, and Writers Bar appears on The World's 50 Best Bars' 50 Best Discovery guide.
The non-alcoholic offering is a real, named part of the menu rather than a token nod. Bar manager Konstantine Arzumanov, who brings more than a decade of luxury-hospitality experience from Abu Dhabi and the Seychelles, has built eight zero-proof cocktails served in the same beautiful stemware as their spirited counterparts. The Emin Pasha is a zero-proof, Arabic-influenced old-fashioned named for the Ottoman explorer, combining Seedlip Spice 94 with miso, orgeat, gum and demerara syrups and a dab of orange-blossom water. The Strike Slip is a luminous clarified drink built on Lyre's White Cane spirit with sencha, soursop and calamansi.
LeRoy Chan, Raffles' assistant director of food and beverage marketing, has framed the approach around treating alcohol-free guests as seriously as any other: nonalcoholic cocktails made with thought and served with the full ceremony of the room. For non-drinkers, Writers Bar is one of Singapore's strongest hotel-bar options for a considered zero-proof serve in a genuinely storied setting.
