Spirited Away opened in November 2020 as America's first booze-free bottle shop, which makes it a genuinely historic address in this category rather than simply a good one. It has since moved from its original Mott Street home to 228 Eighth Avenue in Chelsea, and it remains the deepest non-alcoholic retail selection in New York City.
The premise is total: there is no alcohol in the shop. Everything on the shelves is at or under 0.5% ABV, which is the legal non-alcoholic threshold and the same trace level found in a ripe banana or a glass of kombucha. What that buys you is a room where you can browse the way anyone browses a wine shop — reading labels, asking questions, changing your mind — without navigating around the thing you are avoiding.
The range runs past a hundred brands and is unusually well spread across the category's real divisions. The established distilled alternatives are here — Seedlip, which effectively created the modern segment, and Ritual Zero Proof, whose spirit analogues are built to be mixed rather than sipped. So are the newer botanical drinks that make no attempt to imitate a spirit at all: Ghia, the aperitif built on fig and yuzu and gentian, and The Pathfinder, a hemp-derived amaro alternative. Beyond spirits the shop carries Copenhagen Sparkling Tea and Unified Ferments for anyone who wants complexity without imitation, non-alcoholic wines from Sovi and Prima Pave, and a full supporting cast of beers, bitters, shrubs, amari, mixers and ready-to-drink cocktails.
Hours are 12pm to 8pm, seven days a week, and delivery covers Manhattan with free shipping over $100.
The part that matters most for anyone new to drinking this way is the programming. Spirited Away runs in-store tastings and events, and tasting before buying is the single best defence against the category's real problem: these bottles are expensive, they vary enormously, and a bad first purchase convinces people the whole category is a con. Being able to try Seedlip next to Ghia next to a sparkling tea, and to ask someone which one behaves like what you actually miss, is worth more than any amount of label-reading. For a visitor, the Chelsea location also sits within a short walk of the Hotel Chelsea's Lobby Bar and a few subway stops from most of the alcohol-free rooms in this guide.
