The Kava Bar — Oak Cliff is a fully alcohol-free botanical lounge at 337 W Jefferson Boulevard, just off the Bishop Arts District, opened on 15 February 2025 as part of a small Texas group with sibling locations in Denton, North Dallas and Fort Worth. Instead of liquor it pours kava — the earthy South Pacific root prized for its calming effect — alongside house kratom brews, botanical elixirs, matcha, herbal teas and single-origin coffee. ALCOHOL-FREE BUT NOT SUBSTANCE-FREE: kava and kratom are both psychoactive, and kratom in particular is one we would normally warn hard about. This venue is the exception worth naming. It publishes a printed dosage table — roughly 1.3g of kratom per 8oz drink, a recommended maximum of 4g per drink and 16g in 24 hours — plus explicit warnings that it is not for pregnant or nursing women, not to be followed by driving, and that "anything that makes you feel good can become habit-forming... Consider avoiding any potentially habit-forming substances if you have a history of substance abuse." Kratom is 18-and-over. Guests under 18 are welcome with a guardian until 8pm, with a kid-friendly menu that is 100% kava-free. Named drinks include The Classic Shell ($8), The Bula ($9) and The Teal Latte ($7).
