What Sober October is, and what it is like in Minneapolis
Sober October is a Macmillan Cancer Support fundraiser, launched in the UK in 2014 as Go Sober for October, where participants take sponsorship for staying dry through the month. Unlike Dry January it is explicitly a charity challenge rather than a reset — people do it in teams, for a cause, and usually tell everyone they are doing it.
October is the better month for this and almost nobody says so. The weather still allows a patio, the autumn drinks menus are the most interesting of the year for non-drinkers — spiced, warm, orchard-led builds that do not need alcohol to work — and going out sober through Halloween is a far softer test than surviving a January in the cold. The venues below are ordered by how much of their menu is genuinely zero-proof rather than an afterthought.
The autumn advantage is real and worth planning around. Apple, pear, fig, chai, maple and burnt-sugar flavours carry a drink on their own, so an October mocktail rarely tastes like something is missing the way a summer citrus build can. Cider houses and taprooms are at their best, hot drinks come back onto menus, and a bar that has spent September rewriting its list is far more likely to have thought about the no-alcohol column than one coasting through August. If you drink one thing this month, make it a spiced or orchard build rather than a fruit-and-soda mocktail.
Because Sober October is a sponsored challenge rather than a private reset, it also tends to be social in a way January is not — teams, workmates, whole friendship groups doing it together and telling everyone. That changes what you need from a venue. Instead of somewhere you can quietly not drink, you want somewhere that can seat six, take a booking, and serve a round where nobody's glass looks like the consolation prize. The larger rooms and full-service restaurants below handle that better than a small cocktail bar will.
Fully alcohol-free in Minneapolis
Dedicated sober bars and NA bottle shops — nothing alcoholic on the menu, so the whole list is fair game all month.
Haraz Coffee House
Lyndale
Haraz Coffee House is a Yemeni coffeehouse at the corner of Lyndale and Lake, the first Minnesota location of a Dearborn, Michigan chain. It opened in July 2026 in the large corner room that had been the Iron Door Pub, and later Cause Spirits and Soundbar, until that bar closed in March 2025 — so a liquor-licensed room has become one that pours no alcohol at all. The menu is split into Traditional Drinks, Espresso Bar, and Coffee and Other. The traditional column carries Harazi Mufawar, Adeni and Karak chai, Maleki, Jubani, Sana'ani and Qishr; the espresso bar is anchored by the Haraz Latte, built with honey and the house haraz spice blend.
Ramadan's Egyptian Coffee House
Marcy Holmes
Ramadan's Egyptian Coffee House is an alcohol-free late-night cafe in Marcy Holmes, a block from Dinkytown and the University of Minnesota campus. It soft-opened on 4 June 2026 under owner Ramadan Hussein, with his cousin Ali Mohammed helping run it, and it does not open until 1pm — the schedule of an evening room, running to midnight on weeknights and 1am on Friday and Saturday. The drinks list is genuinely Egyptian rather than Egyptian-themed: sahlab, sobia, carob, tamarind and hibiscus sit alongside Shaay Koshary, Shaay Fatla and Shaay Bilaban teas, Turkish coffee and a saffron or cardamom Arabic coffee served from a dallah.
Cairo Cafe
Blaine
Cairo Cafe is a family-owned Egyptian coffee and dessert house on County Road 10 in Blaine, established in 2026. Everything it serves is halal and it holds no liquor licence, so the whole room is alcohol-free; it is also open until 11pm on weeknights, 1am on Friday and Saturday and midnight on Sunday. The drinks board runs an Arabic-coffee section with Turkish coffee, a tea and chai section carrying Adeni black tea with cardamom, Cairo tea with mint, Somali chai and karak, and a long list of specialty lattes. Kunafa cups, Egyptian feteer and sweet crepes are made to order at the counter.
Qahwah House
Windom Park
Qahwah House is a Yemeni coffeehouse on Central Avenue NE in Windom Park, the Minnesota outpost of a chain founded in Dearborn, Michigan in 2017. It serves no alcohol at all and stays open until midnight seven nights a week, which makes it an evening room rather than a morning coffee stop. Coffee is imported directly from Yemen and roasted on the premises. The menu keeps a full Yemeni Style Coffee and Tea section alongside the espresso bar: Sana'ani, Jubani, Mofawar, Rada'ey and Qishr are all listed by their regional names, and the Adeni Chai is built on Yemeni black tea with cardamom, nutmeg and milk. Sabayah and other Yemeni pastries are sold at the counter.
Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co.
Little Canada
Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co. in Little Canada was the first Yemeni coffeehouse to open in Minnesota, soft-opening in May 2024 and holding its grand opening that June under franchisee Mohamed Hagi and his cousin and business partner Ibrahim Haji Said. It is fully alcohol-free and open to midnight on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The menu is built on Yemeni preparations — Mufawaar, Juban, Aden tea, and qishr, the spiced drink brewed from coffee husks with ginger and cinnamon — alongside a Qamaria latte spiced with cardamom and cinnamon, pistachio lattes, refreshers and smoothies. Honeycomb bread, pistachio milk cake and Dubai chocolate fill the pastry case.
Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co.
Blaine
The Blaine branch of Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co. opened on Central Avenue NE with a grand opening on 15 December 2024, the chain's second Minnesota location after Little Canada. It serves no alcohol and runs to 1am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, which makes it one of the few late rooms in the northern suburbs that is not a bar. Qamaria's coffees are organised around how different Yemeni villages prepare them, so the menu lists Mufawaar, Juban and qishr — the spiced drink brewed from coffee husks — by name rather than by roast level, alongside Aden tea, a cardamom-and-cinnamon house latte, pistachio lattes, refreshers and smoothies.
Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co.
Eden Prairie
Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co. opened on Prairie Center Drive in Eden Prairie on 15 February 2025, the chain's third Minnesota shop and the only Yemeni coffeehouse in the southwest metro. It is fully alcohol-free and open until 1am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The menu is the Qamaria standard: qishr brewed from coffee husks with ginger and cinnamon, Mufawaar with cardamom and cream, Juban, Aden tea, and a house latte spiced with cardamom and cinnamon, alongside pistachio lattes, an espresso list, refreshers and smoothies. Pistachio milk cake, honeycomb bread and Dubai chocolate anchor the pastry counter. The room is set up for long sittings rather than quick pickups, with large tables and no closing-time pressure until well after most Eden Prairie restaurants have shut for the night.
Marigold
Kingfield (South Minneapolis)
Marigold is Minnesota's first dedicated non-alcoholic bottle shop, opened by hair stylist and Honeycomb Salon owner Erin Flavin in late 2022 on Nicollet Avenue in the Kingfield neighborhood of South Minneapolis. Born out of Flavin's own 2020 sobriety journey and conversations with salon clients, the shop is entirely alcohol-free, stocking NA spirits and aperitifs, de-alcoholized wine and sparkling teas, NA beer, bitters, mixers, ready-to-drink cocktails, adaptogenic and functional beverages, plus a THC/CBD section. The curated shelves carry brands including Three Spirit, Ghia, Kin Euphorics, Aplos, and Untitled Art N/A, alongside local THC and CBD producers. As of 2026 it is the Twin Cities' last standing NA bottle shop after the closure of its St. Paul outpost and a Northeast Minneapolis competitor — a status that makes it both a community anchor and, by the owner's own account, a week-by-week labor of love.
Zen Room Kava Lounge
Downtown St. Paul
Zen Room Kava Lounge is widely cited as Minnesota's first kava bar, a fully alcohol-free social space on West Kellogg Boulevard in downtown St. Paul. Rather than coffee or cocktails, the lounge is built around ethically sourced specialty kava — the calming Pacific-island root beverage — plus nootropic and hemp-derived botanical drinks, traditional teas, and snacks. It positions itself as a calm, mindful place to gather, read, or connect, marketing kava as "a social beverage without a next-day hangover," which makes it a genuine fit for sober and sober-curious guests. The menu blends prepared kava drinks served in traditional shells and bowls with espresso-style and tea options, plus sugar-free and dairy-free preparations and build-your-own blends. It carries a 4.9-star Yelp rating across 100-plus reviews, with praise for its sourcing, knowledgeable staff, and atmosphere.
Hamdi Coffee
Whittier
Hamdi Coffee is a Somali tea house on the first floor of Karmel Mall in Whittier, the Somali shopping centre on Pleasant Avenue that houses more than two hundred East African–owned businesses. It serves no alcohol and is open from 6:30am to around 11pm every day, which makes it one of the longest-running non-alcoholic evening rooms in south Minneapolis. The drink it is known for is a Somali tea steamed with whole milk and topped with foam, listed as the Somali Special Tea and priced under three dollars, alongside spiced shaah — black tea steeped with cardamom and cinnamon — and Somali coffee. Sambusas and other savoury pastries are sold at the counter.
Strong non-alcoholic menus in Minneapolis
Regular bars and restaurants with extensive zero-proof programs — meet friends anywhere and still order something genuinely good.
Red Rabbit
Summit Hill, St. Paul
Red Rabbit is an "uncomplicated, authentic Italian" restaurant — pizza, pasta, and oysters — owned by Luke Shimp, the restaurateur behind the Red Cow burger group. The original Red Rabbit opened in 2016 in Minneapolis's North Loop; this Summit Hill location debuted in October 2018 at 788 Grand Ave in the former Wild Onion space, and in 2023 the concept was named one of FSR Magazine's Top 50 Independent Restaurants. Beyond the food, Red Rabbit keeps a genuine "Spirit Free" section in its beverage book, so non-drinkers get more than soda. Named zero-proof options include a Spirit-Free Old Fashioned (Spiritless 74 NA bourbon, demerara, NA bitters), a Spirit-Free Martini (Abstinence NA gin), the Ginger Spritz, the canned Lagunitas Hoppy Refresher, and a bottled St. Agrestis Phony Negroni. Visit Saint Paul singles out the Grand Avenue location for its "sizable selection of liquor-free beverages."
Bar + Cart
Macalester-Groveland, St. Paul
Bar + Cart Restaurant and Lounge opened in the former Khyber Pass Cafe space on Grand Avenue in St. Paul's Macalester-Groveland neighborhood, a partnership between longtime collaborators Ralena Young and Brian Riess. Young, an accomplished Twin Cities beverage director, anchors a serious drink program — and that extends to one of the metro's deepest zero-proof lists. The "Free Spirit" menu currently runs six house non-alcoholic cocktails spanning smoky to sweet — White Fox (coconut water, orange blossom, banana, egg white, cherry-bark vanilla), Up In Smoke (coconut water, grapefruit, jalapeño, basil, smoked salt), Hibiscus Punch, Fruit of the Desert, Devil in the Garden, and Lucky Me — alongside bottled St. Agrestis Phony Negronis in both the classic and mezcal styles. Axios Twin Cities named it the most expansive non-alcoholic list in its January 2026 Dry January roundup. The food leans elevated-comfort, from Coney Island dogs to fresh oysters.
Porzana
North Loop
Porzana is Daniel del Prado's Argentinian wood-fire steakhouse in the North Loop, occupying the former Bachelor Farmer space on North 1st Street. It keeps one of the deepest standing spirit-free lists in the city: six non-alcoholic drinks, five of them at $13, listed on the same cocktail menu as the full-strength ones rather than tucked away. The house builds are the Sanguino, with blood orange, white chocolate, rhubarb, elderflower, lime and sparkling tea, and the Serrata, with blackberry, hibiscus, beet, Greek yogurt and lemon. A tarragon and verde tea drink called T&T, two Copenhagen sparkling teas and a dealcoholised sparkling rose complete the section.
Sidebar at Surdyk's
Nicollet Island - East Bank
Sidebar is the bar and brasserie in the back corner of Surdyk's Liquor and Cheese Shop on East Hennepin, the long-standing Northeast Minneapolis wine and cheese institution. It opened in September 2020 with chef Randall Prudden and runs a wine list drawn from the shop next door. Its non-alcoholic section is a properly built one rather than a footnote: four zero-proof drinks including two house builds — The Purple One, on a blueberry-poblano shrub with ginger, lime and grapefruit, and Mango Is Life — plus a Strawberry Spark made with Three Spirit's Livener, and a packaged list running from Leitz Zero Point Five pinot noir to Best Day's hazy IPA.
CrowBar
Dayton's Bluff
CrowBar is the cocktail lounge and tasting room for Voliere Spirits, an all-women-owned distillery that opened in December 2025 in the former blacksmith shop of the historic Hamm's Brewery complex in Dayton's Bluff. Grete Bergland leads the drinks programme, and the zero-proof column is built with the same culinary approach as the rest of the list and priced at $8 — a flat rate across every non-alcoholic drink. The builds are savoury as often as sweet: one runs roasted strawberry and tomato with balsamic and champagne vinegar, caper, basil, aquafaba and prosciutto; another is charred citrus with baking spices, rosemary, lemon and soda water. House-made French and Italian sodas sit alongside.
Gai Noi
Loring Park
Gai Noi is chef Ann Ahmed's acclaimed Lao restaurant, opened in May 2023 in the former 4 Bells space on Harmon Place, overlooking Loring Park in downtown Minneapolis. Ahmed — also behind Lat 14 and Khâluna, and a James Beard Best Chef: Midwest nominee — draws on the Xieng Khouang region of Laos her family is from; the name references khao gai noi, a short-grain sticky rice. In 2023 Gai Noi became the only Minnesota restaurant named to the New York Times' list of the 50 best restaurants in America. Its drinks menu includes a dedicated "Zero-Proof Cocktails" section of five named, fruit-forward house creations: the Guava Mule, Star Boi (star fruit elixir, citrus oil), Dole Whip (pineapple and coconut cream), Pineapple Butterfly, and Lemongrass Palmer. The restaurant spans a ground-floor bar, upper dining rooms, and a rooftop patio.
Martina
Linden Hills
Martina is the Linden Hills restaurant that launched Daniel del Prado as a Twin Cities restaurateur, an Argentinian-Italian room on Upton Avenue with a bar programme that has been taken seriously since Marco Zappia set it up in 2018. Its non-alcoholic cocktails are listed on the same menu as the full-strength ones at $12 and rotate with the seasons: a Tropical on passion fruit, mango and lime with carbonation; an Apollo built on a non-alcoholic berry amaro with masala chai and lime; and a Lemongrass with ginger, galangal and lemon verbena. ISH sparkling rose and Gruvi's Juicy Dayz non-alcoholic IPA round out the zero-proof options.
Parlour
North Loop
Parlour is a craft cocktail and burger bar in Minneapolis's North Loop, opened in 2013 below sister restaurant Borough by the local restaurant group Jester Concepts. Originally conceived as a waiting room for the upstairs dining room, it became a destination in its own right, known for the cult-favorite Parlour Burger and a serious classics-forward cocktail program built on fresh-squeezed juice, house-made syrups, and bitters. The bar maintains a dedicated "Non-Alcoholic Cocktails" section rather than a single token mocktail, using NA spirits alongside the same botanical and bitter techniques as its full bar. Named zero-proof builds include the NA Parlour Old Fashioned (NA bourbon, NA spiced spirit, piloncillo, bitters), a Phony Negroni, a Gin & Apricot Sour (thyme, lemon, apricot jam, egg white), and a Perfect Matcha made with an NA botanical spirit. It sits among the North Loop's marquee craft-cocktail venues.
Dario
North Loop
Dario is an Italian restaurant with global influences that opened in Minneapolis's North Loop in early 2024, led by chef Joe Rolle and beverage director Stephen Rowe. Rowe spent nearly a decade as a founding team member of the acclaimed Marvel Bar, and at Dario he runs a dedicated spirit-free program built to stand alongside the full-proof cocktails rather than as an afterthought — the restaurant calls it "a groundbreaking spirit-free offering that mirrors the depth and creativity of the full-proof cocktails." The zero-proof list spans bitters-forward and botanical builds such as the New Age Outlaw (Dhos Blanco, Spritz del Conte, lime), No. 75 (ISH London Botanical, Oddbird Blanc de Blanc, lemon), Botanical & Tonic, and the Naw-groni. The kitchen also makes house sodas, pours an Athletic Brewing NA golden ale, and keeps a de-alcoholized wine list. Known for handmade pastas.
Herbst Eatery & Farm Stand
Saint Anthony Park
Herbst Eatery & Farm Stand is a farm-sourced restaurant and market on Raymond Avenue in Saint Anthony Park, opened in 2023 by Angie and Jorg Pierach and supplied by a co-op of young Driftless-area farmers. Its drinks list is structured unusually and to the benefit of anyone not drinking: cocktails are organised first by flavour profile — mineral, bitter, funky, earthy, plus a seasonal slot — and then by potency, with a full-proof, a low-proof and a no-proof version of each. The no-proof builds are not the alcoholic drink minus the alcohol; they are separate recipes engineered to land on the same flavour, so the earthy no-proof reaches for sparkling green and lapsang teas where the full-proof uses mezcal.
Khâluna
Kingfield (SW Minneapolis)
Khâluna is chef-restaurateur Ann Ahmed's upscale Laotian flagship, opened in 2021 at 40th and Lyndale in SW Minneapolis's Kingfield neighborhood. The dining room channels a Southeast Asian resort, and the space also houses a shop and a demonstration kitchen for cooking classes; Eater named it one of the 15 best new restaurants in the U.S. for 2022. For non-drinkers, it's a standout: Khâluna carries one of the largest dedicated non-alcoholic drink menus in the Twin Cities, with the Star Tribune noting the NA list runs "longer than the regular cocktail list." Zero-proof builds lean on alternative spirits (Dhos, Aplos, The Pathfinder) plus house syrups, ginger, citrus, cucumber, and calamansi. Named spirit-free cocktails include the Last Love and The Elixir, alongside a trio of medicinal iced teas; many drinks are sweetened with erythritol rather than sugar.
Indígena by Owamni
Downtown (Guthrie Theater)
Indígena by Owamni is the new Guthrie Theater home of chef Sean Sherman's James Beard Award-winning Indigenous restaurant, which closed its original Water Works space in May 2026 and reopened along the Mississippi riverfront in spring 2026. Operated through Sherman's nonprofit NĀTIFS (North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems), it serves decolonized, pre-colonial cuisine that excludes wheat, dairy, cane sugar, and other colonial imports. The bar is a defining feature: built originally by Anishinaabe/Ojibwe bar manager Kareen Teague, it pioneered an entirely spirit-free Indigenous cocktail menu using foraged Minnesota ingredients — wild rice, corn, currants, teas, and birch, maple, or honey in place of cane sugar. The expanded Guthrie program keeps cocktails and mocktails sourced from BIPOC producers, plus Indigenous teas and Indigenous-owned Copper Cup coffee. Documented zero-proof pours include the Amikomin (black currant, juniper, sumac, birch) and Oginii-Waabigwan (rosehip, strawberry, lavender, agave, rosewater).
Earl Giles Restaurant & Distillery
Northeast Minneapolis (Logan Park)
Earl Giles Restaurant & Distillery is the flagship home of Earl Giles, a Minneapolis brand founded in 2015 by hospitality veterans Jesse Held and Jeff Erkkila that began as a non-alcoholic elixir and mixer company. Named for Erkkila's great-grandfather — a Prohibition-era pilot who flew "medicine" across the northern U.S. — the 18,000-square-foot Logan Park venue pairs a full distillery and canning line with a "Drinks Apothecary" flavor lab holding 600-plus globally sourced extracts and a wood-fired scratch kitchen. The drinks program is built almost entirely on house-made syrups, elixirs, and extracts, and the bar carries an extensive spirit-free menu alongside its cocktails. Named zero-proof pours include an NA Old Fashioned (Good Trip house NA spirit, black walnut molasses) and the Paez (yerba mate, jasmine, pineapple, coconut water). The space centers on a 60-foot bar carved from a single Monkey Pod tree.
Emerald Lounge
West Seventh - Fort Road
Emerald Lounge is a small cocktail and wine bar on West 7th Street in Saint Paul, in the stretch between downtown and the Fort Road neighbourhoods. It keeps a named temperance menu alongside the full-strength list, carrying non-alcoholic beer and wine as well as house-built zero-proof cocktails. The two the city's visitor bureau singles out are the Crimson Breezeberry Shrub, made with raspberry, ginger, champagne vinegar and soda, and the Captain Jack Sparrow, built on milk-washed pineapple with coconut syrup, lime acid and mint — both using techniques, shrub acidity and milk-washing, that a bar reaches for when it wants a spirit-free drink to have structure rather than just sweetness.
Demi
North Loop
Demi is James Beard Award-winning chef Gavin Kaysen's intimate North Loop tasting-menu restaurant, opened in early 2019 next to his flagship Spoon and Stable and operated under Soigné Hospitality Group. With roughly 20 counter seats wrapping an open oval kitchen, it serves a seasonal, reservation-only multi-course menu and is a Relais & Châteaux member. Alongside the wine pairing, Demi runs a parallel non-alcoholic "Temperance Pairing" (around $85, about eight curated zero-proof drinks) built from teas, juices, shrubs, and fermented or infused preparations designed to match each course. Beverage director Jessi Pollak leads the program. Mpls.St.Paul Magazine called the non-alcoholic pairing "just as good and wildly original" as the wine, citing a hibiscus, beet, apple, black pepper, and black trumpet mushroom "red." Demi is regularly cited among the few U.S. tasting menus doing non-alcoholic pairings seriously.
Myriel
Macalester - Groveland
Myriel is chef-owner Karyn Tomlinson's tasting-menu restaurant on South Cleveland Avenue in Macalester-Groveland; Tomlinson won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest in June 2025. The kitchen cooks a Midwestern menu from what the season gives it, and the beverage side runs a full non-alcoholic pairing against the tasting menu rather than offering a single spirit-free drink as an alternative. The pairing's anchor is a dry sparkling tea, deliberately oversteeped so that the tannin gives it the body and drying finish of a wine and resets the palate between courses. Two sweeter non-alcoholic options run alongside it. Bar seats are held for walk-ins.
Nur House Cafe
Downtown West
Nur House Cafe is a Somali family-run cafe that opened on 25 March 2026 in a downtown Minneapolis storefront that had been a Starbucks, a few blocks from the Commons and U.S. Bank Stadium. It is fully alcohol-free and runs into the evening, to 8pm most nights and 9pm on Friday and Saturday. The drinks lean on Somali and other global coffee and tea traditions and rotate seasonally; the baking is done in house by one of the owners, a self-taught baker, and covers chocolate pistachio scones, tahini banana bread, brown butter cinnamon rolls and an Egyptian croissant bread pudding served with cardamom creme anglaise.
