What Sober October is, and what it is like in San Diego
Sober October is a Macmillan Cancer Support fundraiser, launched in the UK in 2014 as Go Sober for October, where participants take sponsorship for staying dry through the month. Unlike Dry January it is explicitly a charity challenge rather than a reset — people do it in teams, for a cause, and usually tell everyone they are doing it.
No single format dominates the 8 alcohol-free venues in San Diego — 2 dry bars, 2 non-alcoholic bottle shops and 2 kava bars — so the list below reads more varied than most cities. The month is not all going out; Monday Morning and Monday Morning are a non-alcoholic bottle shops in San Diego for the evenings at home.
If the plan runs late, San Diego has 5 listed venues with real zero-proof lists open after midnight — enough that you are not stuck with one option. 11 restaurants in San Diego carry a serious zero-proof list, which is what a group needs; the 6 cocktail bars here are for the smaller nights.
If you want a known quantity, Athletic Brewing is the brand most often poured in San Diego: 6 venues list it. The autumn advantage is real: apple, pear, fig, chai, maple and burnt-sugar flavours carry a drink on their own, so if you order one thing this month make it a spiced or orchard build rather than a fruit-and-soda mocktail.
Fully alcohol-free in San Diego
Dedicated sober bars and NA bottle shops — nothing alcoholic on the menu, so the whole list is fair game all month.
The Polished Pigeon
East Village
The Polished Pigeon is San Diego's second dedicated alcohol-free bar, open in East Village since February 2026 and describing itself as a non-alcoholic temperance lounge, coffee bar and social club. Nothing on the premises contains alcohol. The drinks run to three printed sections — nine functional zero-proof builds from $13, six house specials at $15, and six spirit-free classics at $15 including an old fashioned, a manhattan and a whiskey sour built on non-alcoholic bourbon — plus non-alcoholic beer and wine and a full coffee menu from eight in the morning. It is women-owned and queer-owned, and the calendar is as much of the offer as the drinks: live music, an open-stage drag show, a women's recovery group and a Sunday afternoon social all run in the same room. Coffee and the functional list are served Tuesday and Wednesday until four; the full bar runs Thursday to Saturday until ten and Sunday until eight.
Atelier Manna
Encinitas (Leucadia)
Atelier Manna is a brunch-only "chef's workshop" in the Leucadia stretch of Encinitas, opened in April 2023 by husband-and-wife team Andrew and Larah Bachelier and awarded a Bib Gourmand in the 2025 Michelin Guide. Andrew Bachelier, previously of Michelin-starred Jeune et Jolie, runs the kitchen on a "food as medicine" philosophy — and the defining feature is that Atelier Manna serves no alcohol at all. Instead, its beverage list is a rotating menu of "vitality tonics," spirit-free drinks built like bar cocktails from the same produce used in the kitchen: recent pours include Zanzibar (cold brew, red ginseng, cinnamon, tulsi), Veracruz (dragonfruit, hoja santa, toasted juniper, ginger), Jasper, and Goldenrod. San Diego Magazine called it one of the most ambitious zero-proof drink rosters in the city.
Good News Bar
Hillcrest
Good News Bar is San Diego's first dedicated 100% alcohol-free bar, opened in Hillcrest in mid-July 2025 with an integrated non-alcoholic bottle shop. The concept was created by married former bartenders Kaylee and Crystal Clark, who left drinking behind in recovery; since August 2025 the bar has been operated by its majority owner, Ality Richardson. It is named after Mac Miller's song "Good News" and frames itself around raising awareness of addiction and mental health. The house line is coffee by day, cocktails by night, community always: mornings bring coffee, tea, functional cocktails and freshly baked pastries, while evenings run "functional" cocktails built around adaptogens, nootropics, nervines, kava and hemp-derived CBD alongside "free-spirited" builds that reimagine classics with non-alcoholic spirits, plus apéritifs, dealcoholized wines, NA beers and cider. Signature zero-proof drinks include The Merry Go Round, The Woods, Deborah Downer and Goosebumpz. Trivia, live music and DJ nights fill the calendar.
Kava Collective
University Heights
Kava Collective is a fully alcohol-free kava lounge, tea house, and café in San Diego's University Heights, formerly known as Rooted Kava Bar. It bills itself as Southern California's premier kava destination and one of the only bars in the country still making kava in the traditional South-Pacific fashion, brewing small batches with strains sourced from Fiji and serving them in shells, quads, or the half-gallon "Otter" and gallon "Whale" sharing bowls poured from a traditional tanoa. Beyond kava, the menu spans kombucha, espresso and matcha lattes, and house non-alcoholic drinks like the Fake ID (adaptogen-infused kava mocktail), Java Kava, Afterglow, and Antidote. It's open late — to 1am weekdays and 2am weekends — with live music, art shows, yoga, and bingo nights.
Moon Flower
Normal Heights
Moon Flower is a fully alcohol-free cocktail lounge that takes over Maya Moon Collective — a cacao café and organic chocolate shop on Adams Avenue in Normal Heights — Thursday through Sunday evenings. The zero-proof program is run by co-owner Grace Mestecky alongside Maya Moon founder Kathryn Rogers, who launched the collective's booze-free menu in 2023; the evening lounge format took shape in 2024. The rotating, seasonal menu leans on functional and adaptogenic ingredients, local produce, and herbs, building booze-free riffs on classic cocktails. Signature pours include Smoke and Mirrors (NA whiskey, black cardamom, orange bitters, burned honey, lapsang souchong), Spiritual Rest (Dromme, Everleaf, lemon, honey, ginger, turmeric), and Hi Barbie! (NA gin, NA bubbly, prickly pear, strawberry, yuzu, lime, kanna).
Gather Coffee & Kava Bar
North Park
Gather Coffee & Kava Bar is a fully alcohol-free kava bar and third-wave coffee house on Ray Street in North Park, San Diego, open from 2pm until late every night of the week. It runs two programs side by side: espresso and cold brew pulled from locally roasted Mostra Coffee beans, and noble kava sourced from sustainably grown crops in Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Fiji and Hawaii. Kava is a psychoactive root drink from the South Pacific, prepared as a water infusion and drunk socially in place of alcohol — it contains no alcohol, but it is mildly sedative in its own right, which matters if your recovery rules out intoxicants generally rather than alcohol specifically. Gather serves kava only, with no kratom on the menu, which is a meaningful distinction in a category where the two are often poured side by side. Newcomers are directed to the kava flight, which samples across preparations, and staff are widely described as walking first-timers through the whole experience. The room is dog-friendly, stocked with board games, and drinks can be taken to go.
Monday Morning
Pacific Beach
Monday Morning is San Diego's first exclusively non-alcoholic bottle shop and tasting room, opened in Pacific Beach in late 2024 by founder Zane Curtis after he embraced a sober lifestyle. The shop stocks more than 500 zero-proof products — non-alcoholic beer (IPAs, lagers, stouts, sours, wheat), dealcoholized wine, spirit alternatives (gin, whiskey, tequila, rum), ready-to-drink mocktails, and functional drinks with adaptogens and nootropics — across 50-plus brands including Athletic, Bravus, Partake, Seedlip, and Ritual. A tasting bar lets customers sample anything before buying, with staff guiding selections. Curtis's business also handles NA distribution, custom recipes, staff training, and events, and in January 2026 it opened a second location in Ocean Beach.
Monday Morning
Ocean Beach
Monday Morning is a fully alcohol-free bottle shop and tasting bar in Ocean Beach, the second San Diego location from founder Zane Curtis, opened January 2, 2026 at 4967 Newport Ave inside the OB Business Center — on the one-year anniversary of the original Pacific Beach store. It stocks more than 500 zero-proof products: non-alcoholic beer, dealcoholized wine, spirit alternatives, ready-to-drink mocktails, and functional drinks across 50-plus brands including Athletic, Bravus, Partake, Seedlip, and Ritual. A tasting bar lets customers try anything before buying, and because the OB space is compact, the team opens the windows to serve the boardwalk. It's a genuine alcohol-free retail-and-tasting destination steps from the beach.
Strong non-alcoholic menus in San Diego
Regular bars and restaurants with extensive zero-proof programs — meet friends anywhere and still order something genuinely good.
Callie
East Village
Callie is a Mediterranean restaurant on Island Avenue in East Village whose drinks list gives non-alcoholic drinkers three separate sections rather than one token line. Five N/A cocktails are priced at sixteen dollars alongside the full-strength list and built on named alcohol-free spirits — Pentire Adrift, the agave distillate Almave, the Scottish spirit Feragaia and a non-alcoholic Amaro Lucano. There is N/A wine by the glass from Lyre's and Leitz, and two Best Day Brewing beers at eight dollars. Every one of those is priced within a dollar or two of its alcoholic equivalent, which is the clearest signal a bar can send about how seriously it takes the category. The kitchen runs Tuesday to Sunday from five until ten and the bar stays open until eleven, so a drink without dinner is a reasonable plan. A four percent service charge funds staff wages and health benefits, stated plainly on the menu.
Fort Oak
Mission Hills
Fort Oak is a wood-fired restaurant in a converted Mission Hills car showroom, part of chef Brad Wise's Trust Restaurant Group, and its drinks list carries a standing Spirit Free section of five. Two are built in house — Adventura on the non-alcoholic spirit aplós arise with lemon, lemongrass, pandan and soda, and a NON1 sparkling served with salted raspberry and chamomile — and the rest are finished products poured straight: St. Agrestis' Phony Negroni, Athletic Brewing's Upside Dawn golden ale and an alcohol-removed cider from Golden State. That covers spirit, aperitivo, sparkling, beer and cider in five lines, which is broader than most restaurant lists manage. The kitchen is built around a hearth and a raw bar, with dry-aged steaks, whole branzino and seafood towers, and the restaurant closes on Tuesdays and runs an oyster night on Mondays.
Trust
Hillcrest
Trust is the Hillcrest restaurant that started chef Brad Wise's group, cooking over an open flame on Park Boulevard, and its drinks card prints a Spirit Free section of five. Two are finished products — St. Agrestis' Phony Negroni at fifteen dollars and Athletic Brewing's Upside Dawn at eight — and three are made in house at eight dollars each: a grapefruit and strawberry lemonade, a honeydew and lemongrass limeade, and a vanilla whip cold brew. Pricing the three house drinks at eight dollars, against fourteen to eighteen for a zero-proof cocktail elsewhere in the city, is a deliberate choice about who is welcome at the table. Dinner runs Wednesday to Monday from five, with brunch on Saturday and Sunday from nine until two, which is when the cold brew makes the most sense. San Diego Magazine has given the restaurant awards for best brunch, best service and best new restaurant.
Animae
Marina District
Animae is an Asian-inspired fine-dining room on Pacific Highway downtown, led by executive chef Tara Monsod, a three-time James Beard Award semifinalist, and its drinks list prints a Spirit Free section of four. Spirited Away is built on Pentire Adrift with elderflower, honey, Thai basil and black peppercorn; The Malarkey uses a Thai chilli and tamarind syrup with pineapple and lime; and two tea drinks follow — a melon milk tea with jasmine, oat milk and boba, and a cold-brewed single-source iced tea. Prices run from nine to thirteen dollars, against nineteen for the alcoholic cocktails, so a non-drinker is not paying a premium for the absence of alcohol. The Malarkey is the one to order if you would rather avoid spirit analogues entirely. Dinner is served nightly from five, until half past nine on Friday and Saturday, in a dining room built into the base of the Pacific Gate tower on the waterfront edge of downtown.
Cardellino
Mission Hills
Cardellino is the Italian-American room in chef Brad Wise's group, on Goldfinch Street in Mission Hills, making handmade pasta and pizza alongside a bar that prints a Spirit Free section. Four entries run from a ten-dollar cantaloupe and mint limeade made in house, through Bella Vita on a non-alcoholic aperitif with orange and raspberry at thirteen, to Solar Flare at fourteen — aplós arise with lemon, ginger and turmeric — with Athletic Brewing's non-alcoholic golden ale at eight. The limeade matters as much as the two spirit builds: it is the one drink on the list for a guest who would rather avoid spirit analogues altogether, and it is made to order rather than poured. Dinner runs Tuesday to Sunday from five, until ten on Friday and Saturday, with a happy hour in the first hour of service. The room is small and pasta-led, so weekend reservations are advisable.
Herb & Wood
Little Italy
Herb & Wood is a wood-fired Mediterranean restaurant in Little Italy, opened in April 2016 by Top Chef alum Brian Malarkey and partner Christopher Puffer (Puffer Malarkey Collective, also home to Herb & Sea). The kitchen centers on a custom wood-fired hearth turning out housemade pastas, flame-kissed proteins, and seasonal vegetables, and the bar keeps a standing "Spirit-Free" section with four named zero-proof drinks so non-drinkers get composed builds rather than soda or juice. Current options include the Lemon & Herbs (lemon, roasted lemon-thyme syrup, grenadine, soda), the Kauai Chickens (cinnamon pineapple, spiced grapefruit cordial, lime, egg white, mineral water), a non-alcoholic Sbagliato (alcohol-removed sparkling wine and aperitivo), and Malarkey in Paris (smoke tea, bergamot, spearmint, carbonated). It marked its 10th anniversary in March 2026.
Mnemonic Coffee
Bankers Hill
Mnemonic Coffee is a queer, women-owned café in Bankers Hill, opened in July 2023 by longtime specialty-coffee pros Gia Giambalvo and Sarah Girdzius and built intentionally as both a coffee and zero-proof drink space. Alongside oat-milk lattes, cold brew, and pour-overs, the team builds creative coffee sodas and mocktails for people who want the communal feel of a café without alcohol — or without downing multiple cups of caffeine. Named non-alcoholic drinks include the Maple St. (maple syrup, long pepper, cinnamon, apple foam, Topo Chico), the Soy Libre (Coke, simple syrup, soy sauce, lime, cinnamon), the cardamom-and-jasmine Ocean Eyes, and the orange-cream-soda-like Zephyr. The 1970s-inspired space keeps daytime hours, Tuesday through Sunday, with pastries from Relic Bageri.
Mothership
South Park
Mothership is a sci-fi tiki cocktail bar and fully plant-based restaurant in South Park, opened in August 2022 by the team behind the vegan restaurant Kindred. The immersive, crash-landed-spaceship interior won an Orchid Award, and while the rum-forward tiki list is the headline, the bar also runs a genuine, fully built-out zero-proof program: its menu carries a dedicated "Beverages" section where every drink is labeled zero-proof. Named alcohol-free options include the X-Ray (white cane NA spirit, lime, Szechuan peppercorn, spearmint, peppermint oil), Tracking Device (coconut water, coconut cream, lime, hibiscus), Baby Bird (Italian bitter NA spirit, blood orange, caramelized pineapple, lime, soda), and Mindchiller. Mothership ranked among Yelp's 2023 Top 25 mocktail spots in the U.S.
Polite Provisions
North Park
Polite Provisions is a craft cocktail bar that opened in 2013 from San Diego hospitality group CH Projects, set in a 1920s apothecary-style room with a long marble bar near the North Park–Normal Heights border. After a closure tied to a liquor-license suspension, it reopened in early 2025 with a reworked menu organized into five sections — including a dedicated "Sans Alcohol" list — under beverage director Alicia Perry. The zero-proof options lean into the bar's housemade-soda and soda-fountain heritage: Daisy's Soda Pop (apple spice, pomegranate, lime, soda) and Gabe's Painless Killer (passionfruit, coconut, pineapple, lime), plus brand-built drinks like a Cinnamon Cherry Cola on Pentire and a Cacao Strawberry on Feragaia, some served as ice cream floats. It carries James Beard and Tales of the Cocktail recognition.
Rare Society
University Heights
Rare Society is the retro steakhouse in chef Brad Wise's group, on Park Boulevard in University Heights, and its cocktail card carries a Spirit Free section of four. Three are built drinks: Fountain of Youth on a salted raspberry and chamomile sparkling with grapefruit and soda, Fool's Gold on a non-alcoholic Italian aperitif with lemon and a miso-ginger syrup served over a large cube, and Staycation on a white cane spirit alternative with pineapple, lime, orgeat, cranberry and mint. Best Day Brewing's non-alcoholic kölsch is eight dollars. What distinguishes the section is that it sits on the cocktail card among the classics rather than at the back with the sodas, and that three of its four entries are made to order rather than opened. Dinner runs nightly from five, until nine early in the week and ten on Friday and Saturday, in a room built to look like a mid-century Las Vegas steakhouse.
Marisi
La Jolla
Marisi is an Italian restaurant on Wall Street in the village of La Jolla with a Spirit Free section printed on both its dinner and brunch cards. Three builds use real alcohol-free product rather than juice: a Rossini on strawberry, grapefruit and non-alcoholic sparkling wine, an Aperitivo Spritz on a non-alcoholic aperitivo with verjus blanc and champagne acid, and an espresso martini made with the restaurant's own espresso blend and a non-alcoholic amaro. Three drinks is a short list rather than a deep one, but each is built around acidity and bitterness rather than sugar — verjus and champagne acid in the spritz, a non-alcoholic amaro in the espresso martini — which is what separates a considered zero-proof drink from a soft one. Dinner runs nightly from five, until ten on Friday and Saturday, with lunch added on Saturday and Sunday from eleven until two, and the spirit-free section is printed on that card as well.
Paradisaea
La Jolla (Bird Rock)
Paradisaea is a French-modern California restaurant in La Jolla's Bird Rock neighborhood, opened in September 2022 by husband-and-wife owners Eric and Zoe Kleinbub inside the landmark "Piano Building" on La Jolla Boulevard, and Michelin Guide recommended since 2023. Its cocktail program is presented as an illustrated "field guide" to the bird species behind the restaurant's name and includes a dedicated non-alcoholic section. Zero-proof options include The Woods (non-alcoholic distilled agave spirit, marionberry, pomegranate, orange bitters), the Ghia-based Ostrich, and a Seedlip-and-Blue-Majik Takahe, with spirit-free builds also drawing on Ritual. The bar room features lounge seating, board games, and a small retail space selling bottled and canned drinks — a polished, design-forward spot where the NA list gets the same illustration and care as the cocktails.
Realm of the 52 Remedies
Kearny Mesa
Realm of the 52 Remedies is a hidden cocktail bar in the Convoy District, themed on an ancient Chinese medical text and reached through an apothecary front. Its signature cocktails are twenty dollars, and every one of them is printed with the same line: available spirit free at fifteen. That makes the whole seasonal list — drinks such as the Sunomono, the Je Ju and Softly Spoken — orderable without alcohol, rather than a separate short section. The bar does not publish a separate ingredient list for those versions, so what arrives is its own rebuild of the drink without the spirit, at a five-dollar discount — worth asking which of the current list the bartenders think survives the swap best. The bar trades nightly from five, to midnight in the week and half past one on Friday and Saturday, and the room is small enough that a reservation is the safer plan.
Lilo
Carlsbad Village
Lilo is an intimate 22-seat chef's-counter tasting-menu restaurant tucked behind Wildland in Carlsbad Village, opened in April 2025 by chef Eric Bost and restaurateur John Resnick and awarded a Michelin star within weeks of opening. The seafood-leaning, coastally driven menu runs roughly twelve courses, and Lilo treats zero-proof seriously: alongside its wine, Champagne, and hybrid pairings, it offers a full dedicated non-alcoholic beverage pairing (about $110), composed in tandem by beverage director Andrew Cordero and wine director Savannah Riedler to match each plate. Zero-proof creations like the Okinawa Spritz — built around tea tannin, saline, and citrus bitters — are designed to elevate the food rather than merely accompany it, making it one of North County's most serious non-alcoholic pairings.
