Kurasu began in Kyoto as a specialty coffee company with a strong design sensibility, and when it looked to expand beyond Japan it came to Singapore first, opening in July 2017 in partnership with a co-working operator at Odeon Towers. That original address is still widely cited online, but the business has since moved, and the flagship now sits on Waterloo Street in the Bras Basah arts and heritage district. Anyone working from older reviews — and most of the coverage online dates from 2017 to 2020 — will be sent to the wrong place.

The shop is narrow in scope by design. There is effectively no food menu; the counter exists to brew. Espresso-based drinks and hand-poured filter coffee run alongside Japanese tea, and the matcha latte has been the signature item since the first day of trading, prepared with the care you would expect from a company whose home market is Kyoto. Beans rotate, with the roasting programme drawing on Japanese roasters as well as the house's own work, and staff are comfortable talking through origin and method.

The room follows the same logic: minimal, pale, quiet, with limited seating and none of the clutter that fills most Singapore cafes. It is a place to sit with a notebook or a laptop rather than to hold a conversation over several hours. For a non-drinker the honest framing is that this is a daytime venue — it is a coffee shop, not an evening alternative to a bar, and it keeps weekday business hours. Within that, it is among the most rigorous cups in the city, and its position near the Bras Basah museums and the Waterloo Street temples makes it a natural stop on an afternoon spent in that part of town.
