Axelrad

Axelrad is a Midtown Houston beer garden built inside a century-old building at the corner of Alabama and Almeda — a former grocery store run by the Axelrad family in the 1920s — where it shares a leafy, hammock-strewn patio with Luigi's Pizzeria and Retrospect Coffee. Co-owners Monte Large and Adam Brackman opened the beer garden in 2015, and Axelrad marked its 10th anniversary in April 2025 with weekend festivities and a vinyl live album, "Live at Axelrad, Jazz Wednesdays," recorded with the local artists who play its weekly Wednesday jazz nights. Brackman frames the place in community terms — "We really just try to embrace and support the community," he told CultureMap Houston, describing the concept as somewhere that "is not your home and it's not your work, but it's that place you're going to go to." It has also served as a refuge during Houston power outages: "When a lot of people don't have power, we're open for people to come charge phones."

Non-drinkers are thoroughly served here: the drinks menu carries its own dedicated Non-Alcoholic section, listed alongside — not tucked beneath — the craft beer, specialty cocktail, wine, and liquor sections, and broken into Mocktails, N/A Beer, and Other. The standing named mocktails are the Elderberry Spritz (Giffard Elderflower, lemon, Lagunitas Hoppy Refresher), the Jalapina Business (Giffard pineapple, mango, lime, jalapeño, mineral water), and the Briney Melon Refresher (watermelon, lime, mint, ginger beer). The N/A beer list runs six deep — Athletic Upside Dawn and Free Wave Hazy IPA, Lagunitas IPNA and Hoppy Refresher, Best Day Electro-Lime, and Brooklyn Special FX Hoppy Lager — rounded out by Saint Arnold Root Beer and Mexican Coca-Cola. In past Dry Januarys the bar has run $7 seasonal mocktail specials on top of that, including the "cran you BE anymore merry?" (cranberry, lime juice, and a housemade syrup of apple, cinnamon, and brown sugar) and the warm "not toddy," which pairs that same syrup with fresh lemon juice.

It's a casual, walk-in outdoor drinking spot known for live music, food trucks, and recurring community events, and families are welcome on the patio until the evening 21+ transition — 9pm Sunday through Thursday, 8pm Friday and Saturday.
