Beyond the Bar Bottle Shop

Tucked into a 1958 mid-century modern breeze-block building in Richardson's Core District — one block off US-75 — Beyond the Bar opened in 2023 as the first alcohol-free bottle shop in DFW, and describes itself today as the only one in Texas. Every bottle, can and pour on the premises is zero-proof, making it the rare destination where sober, sober-curious, pregnant or simply dry-for-the-evening guests can walk in and drink on equal footing with anyone else. The shelves run past 280 products: alongside Athletic, Seedlip, Lyre's and Ritual sit Almave, Trejo's, De Soi, Ghia, Pathfinder, Wilderton and Free Spirits, dealcoholised wines from Leitz and Lautus, and a deep functional range including Kin Euphorics, Everleaf and Pentire.

Co-founders Julie and Reid Robinson — who previously owned two traditional bars in Richardson — built the drink menu around genuine mixology rather than simple substitution. The flagship Blueberry Moon Shrub layers a blueberry-ginger-mint botanical spirit with elderberry shrub, fresh lime juice and ginger beer, drawing comparisons to a Moscow Mule without the heat. Julie also makes a zero-proof Old Fashioned that KERA reporters noted carried convincing coffee notes with the ritual feel of the original. The Italian Spritz, meanwhile, won the Dallas Observer's 2023 Reader's Choice award for Best Mocktail — a notable feat for a shop that had been open only months at the time. All three are still in the shop's live drinks catalogue.

The space doubles as a community hub, with tastings and Zero-Proof Cocktail 101 classes that teach two drinks and supply the tools, spirits and mixers, and the team runs a dry bar service for private and corporate events, both in the lounge and off-site. There is no dress code and no reservation needed to visit the bottle shop or tasting room. The clientele skews deliberately broad — Gen Z, Muslim and South Asian communities, expectant mothers, and anyone who just doesn't want a Diet Coke — which gives the room an unusually relaxed, inclusive energy for a drinks destination. One note for anyone avoiding all intoxicants rather than alcohol specifically: the shelves also carry hemp and THC-infused drinks and kava shots alongside the zero-proof range, so it is worth reading labels or asking staff.
